Today I heard a well-known rabbi [who was a candidate to be Chief Rabbi] say that when a person spends his days and nights learning - that is Galus [!!!]. But if he works like in high tech etc. etc. then that is fitting with the concept of Mikdash. [כדאי לזכור שיותר טינופת נמצא באינטרנט ממה שהיה בעולם בכל ההיסטוריה].
Remember a rule for life: When someone says something it is often worthwhile asking: מהיכי תיתי?? Is there is a source for that??? Often one will discover that either there is no source or that it is not a simple as presented [e.g. "all yeshiva boys must serve in the army" "it is forbidden for anybody to serve in the army" "girls must learn gemara like boys" "it is forbidden for any girl to learn תורה שבעל פה ever" "everyone must make aliyah now" and the list goes on].
Is there a source for the idea that learning Torah day and night is Galus but being involved in more mundane matters is much holier?
It is true that the Rambam says that מעתיקי השמועה also had jobs [הלכות ת"ת א-ט - please listen to our shiurim on Hilchos Talmud Torah] but NOBODY would say that לימוד התורה is Galus and hi-tech is Geulah/Mikdash.
Chazal say that from the time the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed אין לו להקדוש ברוך הוא אלא ארבע אמות של הלכה בלבד. For the השראת השכינה of the Beis Hamikdash there is but one way - Torah.
People have these wacky pseudo-Reform ideas and then impute them on the Torah.
Buyer beware.
PS - There is a mitzva to support one's family and there is also a mitzva to build up Eretz Yisrael in any way possible [including technologically]. But לימוד התורה it is not.
