At the end of Parshas Breishis it says "ויתעצב אל לבו" - Hashem was sad in his heart [because of the evil deeds of man].
How is it possible that Hashem was sad?
Answered the Imrei Emes [son of the Sfas Emes and third Gerrer Rebbe]: It means that Hashem made Himself כביכול sad so that the people would be sad and then he could bring the מבול. Until that point the people were happy and the מידת הדין doesn't work well against happy people!!
