There are many things in life that really bother or matter to one person while other people don't care at all.
There are certain things in life which in some cultures are big deals while in others don't matter at all.
One of myriad examples: Sports. In Western culture, the game is *important* and superior athletes are iconic. In other cultures [like the Torah world], games means nothing and superior athletes are [often] unknown and irrelevant.
Another: Money. In Western culture money is a huge deal and most people LOOOOOOVVEEEEE their money [as a Gabbai Tzdaka for decades I can tell you how hard it is to *extract* money from even the wealthiest people. Like *extracting* teeth. A hundred dollars won't set him back at all and either will a thousand but they hold on for dear life. As Chazal have it (Brachos 61a), some people love their money more than their lives!!!]. But in other places [like some people in the Far East] - poverty is an ideal and having more than you abslutely need is looked down upon.
Another: A college degree. In the Western world, receiving a degree is of the highest value. [I once knew a MO boy who was nebuch dying with cancer and he worked hard before he died to complete his degree. For whatttt????] In other cultures [like the Torah world], one is looked down upon if he goes for higher secular education.
Another: Military service. In some cultures, if you don't serve people HATE you [like a small middle eastern country]. In others, while soldiers are respected nobody who declines to serve is looked down upon [like the US].
Another: Food. In most places, food being tasty is a reason to eat it. For those working on heightening their ruchniyus, a food being tasty is a reason NOT to eat it [yes, we are aware of the Yerushalmi ואכמ"ל].
Mussar Haskel: We all have stories we tell ourselves [like all day every day:-)] and a value system that we adopted [that we are often not even cognizant of] due to various factors. We should remember that we reserve the right to change them at any time, like when they no longer serve Hashem and ourselves well.
