The only life we have is when we cling to Hashem. If we are not living spiritual lives then we are not living. ואתם הדבקים בה' אלהיכם - When we cling to Hashem, חיים כולכם היום - We live today. Otherwise we are like a chicken without a head, running around but dead רח"ל.
We have to internalize this idea. To the extent we do - we live.
