Opening – positive mitzvos (9-10)

If one speaks lashon hara about a kohen and denigrates him through this, one transgresses the positive mitzvah of (Vayikra 21:8), "You shall sanctify him," which commands us to treat kohens with much honor. By speaking lashon hara against him, one is certainly not honoring him.

If one speaks lashon hara about one's oldest brother, or the husband of one's mother, or the wife of one's father, one also transgresses the positive command of, "Honor your father and you mother." From the extra word "et," it is derived that these people must be honored as well.
How much more, heaven forefend, that speaking lashon hara about one's actual father or mother certainly incurs the transgression of the positive mitzvah of honoring one's father and mother. Besides this, one also transgresses (Deuteronomy 27"16), "Cursed be he who denigrates his father or mother."

The Meaning Of Yom Kippur

In this year's Shabbos Shuva drasha, the Tolna Rebbe Shlita quoted Rebbe Yechezkel of Kuzmir. He said that if a person is rushing to Kol Nidrei, already feeling the awe and gravity of the day, and he sees a Jew who is troubled and just needs to .... talk, but just ignores him and keeps going to shul - he hasn't begun to understand what Yom Kippur is all about. The most IMPORTANT thing to do at that moment is to stop and listen [he can say Kol Nidrei by himself later].

To be great ISN'T THAT HARD. It just requires that we step out of ourselves and our immediate concerns from time to time.

SWEETEST FRIENDS!! - I write this as someone who knows so many people going through rough times. Shalom bayis issues, problem with children, health challenges, financial crises, work related pressures and anxiety, unhealed scars of childhood, weight related issues, disappointing favorite sports teams that almost never win the championship [OK - that is not so bad:-)] etc. etc. etc.

Let us all give them of our time [without an active phone to interrupt] and open our hearts to be with them in their struggles. [And sometimes - a few bucks would also help - but that is not my point]. We can start by listening to and empathizing with our spouses [if we are lucky enough to have one or two. Two?? Didn't Rabbeinu Gershom outlaw that a thousand years ago?]. We can do this best by reflecting back to them what they are saying to make them sure that they are being fully understood. We can then move on to our children, siblings friends etc.etc.

If we can open ourselves to bear the burdens of others - Hashem will hopefully act in kind and help us bear ours [or remove them altogether].

I thank all those who sent names for tefilla - enabling me to open my heart and soul for them in front of Hashem.

Bi-ahava rabba,

Me

My Bad

Shaaalloooommmmm swweeeeetest friends!!!!

This dvar Torah should be a zchusssssss for my beloved friend R' Yosef Ezra Jaspan and his whole family for a year of LIMITLESS BLESSING in body and spirit!!! With friends like R' Yosef - life is so much more meaningful and enjoyable!

Also - a refuah shleima for Please daven!
---------

This is EXCITING!!!! Tomorrow we all get a THOROUGH cleansing! All of the garbage our souls bear is removed and we become pure once again. Price? FREE! And we even save on food for a day.

Ahhhh - how AWESOME is to be Jewish?!

We can fix our past boo-boos small and large. Plus, fasting from time to time is healthy for our bodies. So it's great all around.

On Yom Kippur we read the book of Yonah. Why?

Many explanations are offered. There is one pasuk that really encapsulates our avoda for the day. There is this huuuge storm [Hurricane Hugo?] and Yonah is SLEEPNG. They say to him מה לך נרדם - What are you sleeping for??? There is a storm raging out there!! What should we do?? It's like Houston all over again!! He tells them that he is a Jew and that he was running away from Hashem.

Then the pasuk says

And he said to them, "Pick me up and cast me into the sea, so that the sea may subside from upon you, for I know that, because of me, this mighty tempest is upon you."

This, said the Brisker Rov, is the lesson of the day. It's my bad.

Wow!! People are soooo quick to deflect critisicm and here Yonah takes all the blame on himself in a second.

On Yom Kippur we want to fix our sins. The only way to do that is to take responsibility. On a global level we have to remember what Chazal teach us - Everything that happens in geopolitics is for Am Yisrael. Hurricanes happen because of Am Yisrael. Basically, without hubris or arrogance - the whole world is for us. Actually, the purpose of creation is to reveal the glory of Hashem and we are the agents. So when something happens - it is up to us to fix ourselves without pointing fingers.

On a personal level - we also must not point fingers [anyway when you point one finger at someone else, three more are pointed at you]. The way to fix our personal relationships is to accept upon ourselves the onus of fixing breached relationships, both interpersonal and with Hashem.

If we can do that - go to our loved ones and apologize for all we have done and accept upon ourselves to be better in the future - life would be close to bliss.

We can never change another human being. We can only change ourselves. And that is our mandate.

Have a sweet, uplifting Yom Kippur beloved friends and I request forgiveness for any sins of commission or omission.

Bi-ahava rabba,
Me

PS - I davened at the kotel on Rosh Hashana for those who sent their names and will daven on Yom Kippur as well.

Great Torah based on a shiur by the Rebbe Shlita as a הכנה for the HOLY DAY that is almost upon us. Worth eleven minutes of your time...

In this shiur we continued learning the gemara we have been discussing on the blog and attempted to explain the following very deep passage.

When learning this Torah, I cannot help but be astounded and blown away by the levels of spirituality and profundity a human being can achieve. I mean, he was made of flesh and blood just like me but believe me - the difference is heaven and earth. A different stratosphere.

The gemara we have been discussing on the blog recently.

Beginning Vs. Ending

After finally reaching the shores of America, a Russian immigrant searched for employment in order to support his family. He resolved to open a small shop. A friend advised him that in order to attract customers, he should advertise his shop by placing a catchy sign on the storefront. Following his friend’s advice, he ordered a large sign that read, “Grand Opening,” and affixed it for all to see.

The next day, the immigrant observed a significant crowd gathered around a particular shop. Taking a closer look at what was causing such an attraction, he noticed a bright-colored sign on the store window. Although he could not read English, he noticed that on this sign there were more words than he had on his shop’s storefront. “I should get a sign just like that one,” he thought to himself, as he carefully jotted down the words on a piece of paper. Immediately he ordered a sign to be ready the following day.

The next morning, adjacent to his “Grand Opening” sign he proudly affixed his new sign reading, “Going Out of Business.”

What Is Greater Praise - Shema Or Baruch Shem?

The gemara says in Pesachim [56]:

For R. Shimon b. Lakish said: And Yaacov called unto his sons, and said: Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you [that which shall befall you in the end of days]. Yaacov wished to reveal to his sons the ‘end of the days’, whereupon the Shechinah departed from him.

Said he, ‘Perhaps, Heaven forfend! there is one unfit among my children, like Avraham, from whom there issued Yishmael, or like my father Yitzchak, from whom there issued Esav.’ [But] his sons answered him, ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God the Lord is One: just as there is only One in thy heart, so is there in our heart only One.’ In that moment our father Jacob opened [his mouth] and exclaimed, ‘Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever.’ Said the Rabbis, How shall we act? Shall we recite it, — but our Teacher Moshe did not say it. Shall we not say it — but Yaacov said it! [Hence] they enacted that it should be recited quietly. R. Yitzchak said, The School of R. Ammi said: This is to be compared to a king's daughter who smelled a spicy pudding. If she reveals [her desire], she suffers disgrace; if she does not reveal it, she suffers pain. So her servants began bringing it to her in secret.

The Maharal [Nesiv Ha-avodah 7] explains:

I cannot tell you how frightening this passage is. We know from everywhere that the praise of שמע ישראל is much greater than the praise of ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו. Yet, the Maharal says the opposite - ברוך שם is greater. HOW CAN THAT BE???

To Be Like Angels

Dr. Nosson Leff

5644

The Sfas Emes begins this ma’amar by quoting the Gemara in Yoma (2b): “Seven days before Yom Kippur, the kohein gadol (the High Priest) would be away from his wife [in preparation for the] one day.”

So far, so good. But then the Sfas Emes moves on to a theme that seems totally unrelated to what came before. He tells us that Yom Kippur is unique. How ? Because this is the one day in the year in which this world (olam hazeh) even distantly resembles the world-to-come (olam haba). How so? Because by not eating or drinking on Yom Kippur, we take on the behavior of mal’achim ( “angels”– who do not eat or drink).

The Sfas Emes continues here to develop a new perspective on some features of Yom Kippur. He starts by noting another way in which Yom Kippur resembles olam haba. In the world-to-come, life is le’ma’ala min ha’teva ( i.e, unconstrained by Nature). So, too, on Yom Kippur, we can more easily conduct ourselves in a way that defies normal rules of human behavior.

What behavior does the Sfas Emes have in mind when he says that, in principle, we can conduct ourselves in a manner that is “le’ma’ala min ha’teva”? He has in mind Teshuva (“return to one’s true self”; repentance). For Teshuva requires changing one’s behavior. And if you think about it, you will soon agree that such change is truly “above” Nature. How so? Because Nature would have a person’s past misconduct continue, and thus reinforce itself. As the proverb says: “Hergeil na’aseh teva”. That is, a person’s habitual behavior becomes his (second) nature.

Into this context comes Teshuva, transforming the person’s long-time way of living. Such change is “above Nature”; i.e., “supernatural”. Hence, the close fit between Teshuva and Yom Kippur, the most ” holy” (that is, le’ma’ala min ha’teva) day in the year.

Continuing in this vein, the Sfas Emes tells us that Yom Kippur is also the day in the year in which Teshuva is most feasible. In support of this statement, the Sfas Emes quotes a pasuk in Tehillim (139:16). (Before you see this pasuk, be aware that it is exceptionally hard to translate. Also, I am not sure whether the English translation makes it easier or harder to understand.) With this warning in mind, here is the pasuk: “Galmi ra’u ei’necha, ve’al sif’re’cha kulam yi’ka’seivu; ya’mim yu’tzaru ve’lo echad ba’hem.” (ArtScroll: “Your eyes saw my unshaped form, and in Your book all were recorded; though they will be fashioned through many days, to Him they are one.”)

What is this pasuk saying? Read on and see.

The pasuk is saying: one day in the year is unique (“ve’lo echad ba’hem”). Unique in what way? Unique inasmuch as on that day, one can more easily break out of the mold within which we are constrained and to which the pasuk refers (“Galmi ra’u ei’necha…”). On which day of the year are we granted this special chessed that reforming ourselves is easier? Rashi — quoting Yalkut Shim’oni on the pasuk — answers: “Zeh Yom HaKippurim”.

The Sfas Emes has given us new perspectives on some basic features of Yom Kippur. He has told us not to regard our fasting on Yom Kippur as a negative (e.g., as a punishment). On the contrary, he views our fasting on Yom Kippur in potentially positive terms. For ideally fasting can put us in the mode of the mal’achim, who neither eat nor want to eat. Our fasting on Yom Kippur makes that one day in the year in which we demonstrate (to ourselves) our ability to live in a state above our physical wants. That liberation can make it easier to aspire to live at a higher level of ruchniyus the rest of the year.

The Sfas Emes has also taught us not to see our fasting as a “stand-alone” mitzva. Instead, we should view our fasting as part of a comprehensive spiritual CARE package designed to help us reach a higher level of ruchniyus. The Sfas Emes articulated this possibility when he said that on Yom Kippur, we can experience some olam haba.

Thus, note the contrast between fasting on Yom Kippur and fasting on Tish’a Be’Av. Fasting on Tish’a BeAv conveys a message of bereavement and mourning. By contrast, the Sfas Emes has told us to view fasting on Yom Kippur as an instance in which we strive to rise above our physical needs. The message conveyed can be the aspiration for a life with more spirituality. The difference in messages comes out clearly if we consider the very different moods of these two fasting days. Tish’a BeAv is a sad day; Yom Kippur can be a happy day.

The Sfas Emes’s other lesson focuses on Teshuva. Changing one’s behavior — i,e,.. Teshuva — is the ultimate in le’ma’ala min ha’teva, and hence, very hard to do. But help is at hand. HaShem has designated Yom Kippur as the day in the year on which overcoming Nature — that is, transforming ourselves by doing Teshuva — is unusually feasible.

Before concluding, we must address one more question. We know — from long experience — that the disparate parts of a Sfas Emes ma’amar all fit neatly together. We may therefore wonder: why did the Sfas Emes begin this ma’amar with the quotation from the Gemara in Yoma? To a naive observer, that quotation seems totally unconnected with the rest of the ma’amar.

I suggest that we can find a possible answer if we have another look at the text: “Seven days … the one day “. Adding these two numbers gives us the number eight — a number well known to indicate special kedusha. For example, bris mila takes place on the eighth day. Likewise, Shemini Atzeres is a day of unique kedusha. Most tellingly, the significance of the text — “Seven days … the one day” — is clear if we consider another context in which the Gemara makes the very same statement. Chazal make that statement in the context of the seven days of the Mishkan’s inauguration. As with the kohein gadol and Yom Kippur , the seven days were preparation for ( Vayikra, 9:1) the — you guessed it — eighth day (“…bayom ha’shemini.”)

What is special about the number eight? A cube — the prototype of a “thing”; i.e., Nature — has six sides. With its internal point, a cube has seven aspects. If Nature (teva) is seven, eight is le’ma’ala min ha’teva — above and unconstrained by Nature. As we have seen, Yom Kippur is about Teshuva. Teshuva, in turn, is about trying to live “le’ma’ala min ha’teva”. Similarly, fasting is also a prime feature of Yom Kippur. For a human being to abstain from food and drink for 26 hours is also behavior unconstrained by Nature.

Hence, we can appreciate the care with which the Sfas Emes crafted this ma’amar. Thus, he began by citing the passage from Yoma which refers to the number “eight”. Referring to that number immediately brings to mind “le’ma’ala min ha’teva.” And that reference sets the stage for the Sfas Emes’s discussion of two features of Yom Kippur — fasting and Teshuva.

One Answer For Everything

There is a HUUUGE methodological principal in learning explicated by Rav Chaim Soloveitchik: An explanation that answers the most questions is most likely the correct one. If a person acts in crazy ways and you can offer a different explantion for each behavior in such a way that he would be considered sane, it would still be more plausible to assume he is crazy because that explains everything in one fell swoop [see Chagiga 3 about a שוטה].  If you have 15 question and either give 15 different answers or one answer can solve all 15 problems it is more likely that the latter approach is correct. Certainly if you have fifteen problems and have only 5 possible answers to explain 5 of the problems and another answer that explains all 15, it is more plausible that the one answer is correct.

So take the world. There are trillions upon trillions of phenomena. That all present questions - How did they come onto being and how do they know to be as they are? A few examples [like I said - of trillions and trillions]: How does your DNA know and store so much information? How does a drop of semen and an egg produce a real live human being [with consciousness]?! How does my body know how to digest my food? How is there a law of gravity in the absence of which life would be impossible?

Believers have one answer to EVERY QUESTION on earth [and in the entire Universe for that matter]: G-d.

Deniers have to find an new explanation for EVERYTHING. And there are many things they admit that they can't explain [like the gaps in evolution or how the first cell came onto being].

So what is more plausible??

I often think about this idea and was glad to see it in the book The Case For A Creator by Lee Strobel:

“This is a form of practical reasoning that we use in life all the time. It says if we want to explain a phenomenon or event, we consider a whole range of hypotheses and infer to the one which, if true, would provide the best explanation. In other words, we do an exhaustive analysis of the possible explanations and keep adding information until only one explanation is left that can explain the whole range of data.

The way you discriminate between the competing hypotheses is to look at their explanatory power. Often, more than one hypothesis can explain the same piece of evidence. For instance, as we just agreed, deism and theism can both explain the beginning of the universe. Okay, fine. But if you keep looking at the data, you find that only theism can explain the evidence for design in biology after the origin of the universe. And so theism has superior explanatory power. We reach conclusions with a high degree of confidence using this form of reasoning in our everyday life. This is what detectives do. This is what lawyers do in courts of law. Scientists use this approach. This model can enable us to achieve a high degree of practical certainty. And when we look at the evidence I’ve mentioned from cosmology, physics, biology, and human consciousness, we find that theism has amazing explanatory scope and power. The existence of God explains this broad range of evidence more simply, adequately, and comprehensively than any other worldview, including its main competitors, naturalism or pantheism. And the discovery of corroborating or supportive evidence is accelerating. In 1992, the historian of science Frederic Burnham said the God hypothesis ‘is now a more respectable hypothesis than at any time in the last one hundred years'".

Making Hashem Real

Why do I post about Emunah in Hashem. It is safe to asume that just about everybody who comes to visit the blog believes in Hashem - right?

Well - not so pashut.

When Rav Yeruchem Levovitz was in the Mir he spoke a lot about Emunah. Rav Chatzkel Levenstein spoke about Emunah a great deal when he was mashgiach in Ponovitch. It is safe to assume that the students in Mir and Ponivitch were not atheists or even agnostics, so why "preach to the choir"? They were already convinced?

The answer is that we all have a little apikorus festering within ourselves. That is why we waste time. That is why we daven without kavana sometimes. That is why we speak lashon hara. That is why we worry more about money than aveiros. That explains a WHOLE LOT.

Yes, we profess to believe but our belief is not מוחשי - real and concrete. Nobody wants cancer and we would do anything to prevent it. Yet, the Torah tells us that speaking lashon hara is WORSE than cancer and yet we speak [and listen and read]. The lashon hara blogs get thousands of thousands of hits weeekly. From "Frum Jews".

Jews fight with other Jews. How can we fight if we believe that it causes the שכינה tremendous צער. Yet, another Yom Kippur will pass and couples will continue to fight and even divorce. Shuls and schools will continue with the often dirty politics [I witnessed it first hand on many occaisions sadly] etc. etc.

We say טוב לי תורת פיך מאלפי זהב וכסף but do we really think that learning a daf gemara is worth more than 50 million dollars? If we did then we would live in a constant state of joy because EVERY DAY we win the lottery [if we are קובע עתים].

I am not sure that anybody who believes with all of his heart and soul in Hashem can care about professional sports. How can he? Hashem clearly doesn't. How do we know? Because He TOLD US what he cares about. So how does cheering the Yankees on "shtim" with belief in G-d? Unless one believes that Hashem wants him to enjoy his leisure by watching baseball.

Maybe. Maybe not. Everyone needs to "chill" but there is a difference between "chilling" and caring which guys wearing which uniforms scored more runs.

So we need to CONSTANTLY talk about the existence of Hashem in order to make Him real as we think we are. We need to see Him in EVERYTHING we do, think, say, experience and feel.

Can we?

Science Proves That There Is A Creator

There are various ways to strengthen our faith in Hashem and Torah. Here are 6.

1] Tradition. We know Torah true because we have an uninterrupted line of ancestors who all passed down the traditions and beliefs of our faith.

2] History. When we look at Jewish history we are convinced that there is something clearly unique and supernatural about the Jewish People.

3] The lifestyle. When one lives a Torah lifestyle it becomes clear that this is the true way to live. You just FEEL it. Shabbbos. Yom Tov. A Jewish wedding. Taharas Hamishpocha. Giving tzedaka and doing chesed. Tefillah. It's AMAZING.

4] Torah. When one goes deep into Torah he sees that this CANNOT be man-made. SO MUCH WISDOM AND DEPTH!!!

5] The stories of tzadikim. We see that people who live Torah true lives on the highest levels have miraculous powers that are gifts from Hashem for those who become very close to the source of existence and nature.

6] Science. People think science is a challenge to belief in Hashem. The EXACT opposite is true. We will excerpt [with slight editing] from a book I am currently reading The Case For A Creator by Lee Strobel:

“Could you list, say, half a dozen examples of how you believe science points toward theism?” I asked. Meyer settled deeper into his chair. “I would start,” he said, “with the new cosmology—the Big Bang theory and its accompanying theoretical underpinning in general relativity. These two theories now point to a definite beginning of the universe. The fact that most scientists now believe that energy, matter, space, and time had a beginning is profoundly antimaterialistic. “You can invoke neither time nor space nor matter nor energy nor the laws of nature to explain the origin of the universe. General relativity points to the need for a cause that transcends those domains. And theism affirms the existence of such an entity—namely, God. “In short,” he added, “naturalism is on hard times in cosmology; the deeper you get into it, the harder it is to get rid of the God hypothesis. Taken together, the Big Bang and general relativity provide a scientific description of what we call creation ex nihilo—creation out of nothing. As Nobel Prize–winner Arno Penzias said about the Big Bang, ‘The best data we have are exactly what I would have predicted had I nothing to go on but the first five books of Moses, the Psalms and the Bible as a whole.’

Meyer waited, apparently to see if I had any further questions, but I motioned for him to continue with his examples. “The second category of evidence would be for ‘anthropic fine-tuning.’ This means the fundamental laws and parameters of physics have precise numerical values that could have been otherwise. That is, there’s no fundamental reason why these values have to be the way they are. Yet all of these laws and constants conspire in a mathematically incredible way to make life in the universe possible.” I asked him for an example. “Take the expansion rate of the universe, which is fine-tuned to one part in a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion,” he said. “That is, if it were changed by one part in either direction—a little faster, a little slower—we could not have a universe that would be capable of supporting life.

As Sir Fred Hoyle commented, ‘A commonsense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature.’ “Well, maybe this looks fine-tuned because there actually is a fine-tuner. In the opinion of physicist Paul Davies, ‘The impression of design is overwhelming.’ And I thoroughly agree. This is powerful evidence for intelligent design.

“The third example of science pointing toward God is the origin of life and the origin of information necessary to bring life into existence,” he continued. “Life at its root requires information, which is stored in DNA and protein molecules. Richard Dawkins of Oxford said that ‘the machine code of the genes is uncannily computer-like.’ If you reflect on that, you realize that computers run on software programs that are produced by intelligent engineers. Every experience we have about information—whether it’s a computer code, hieroglyphic inscription, a book, or a cave painting—points toward intelligence. The same is true about the infor- mation inside every cell in every living creature.” “Isn’t that just an argument from ignorance?” I asked. “Scientists may not currently be able to find any explanation for how life began, but that doesn’t necessarily point toward a supernatural conclusion.”
“This is not an argument from ignorance,” Meyer insisted. “We’re not inferring design just because the naturalistic evolutionary theories all fail to explain information. We infer design because all those theories fail and we know of another causal entity that is capable of producing information—namely, intelligence. Personally, I find this to be a very strong argument indeed.”

Continuing on to the fourth example, Meyer said, “Then there’s the evidence for design in molecular machines that defy explanation by Darwinian natural selection. These integrative, complex systems in biological organisms—which microbiologist Michael Behe calls ‘irreducibly complex’—include signal transduction circuits, sophisticated motors, and all kinds of biological circuitry.” “What’s the argument based on this?” I asked. “You see, these biological machines need all of their various parts in order to function. But how could you ever build such a system by a Darwinian process of natural selection acting on random variations? Natural selection only preserves things that perform a function—in other words, which help the organism survive to the next generation. That’s survival of the fittest. “The problem with irreducibly complex systems is that they perform no function until all the parts are present and working together in close coordination with one another. So natural selection cannot help you build such systems; it can only preserve them once they’ve been built. And it’s virtually impossible for evolution to take such a huge leap by mere chance to create the whole system at once. Of course, this forces the question: how did the biochemical machine arise? Behe says maybe these biological systems look designed because they really were designed. After all, whenever we see irreducibly complex systems and we know how they arose, invariably a designer was the cause.” “How strong of an argument do you think that is?” I asked. “I think it’s very strong,” he replied with a smile. “And you see that in the weak objections that are proposed by Darwinists. And again, that’s just one more example.

The next one would be the Cambrian explosion, which is yet another striking piece of evidence for design in the history of life.” I told him that in a previous interview Jonathan Wells had already explained the basics of Biology’s Big Bang. “He talked about it primarily in terms of being an argu- ment against Darwinism,” I said. “Indeed, it is,” Meyer replied. “You have between twenty and thirty-five completely novel body plans that come online in the Cambrian. You have a huge jump in com- plexity, it’s sudden, and you have no transitional intermediates.

“But this is also affirmative evidence for design, because in our experience information invariably is the result of conscious activity. Here we have the geologically sudden infusion of a massive amount of new biological information needed to cre- ate these body plans, far beyond what any Darwinian mechanism can produce. Darwinism simply can’t account for it; design is a better explanation. “Think about how suddenly these new body plans emerged. As one paleontologist said, ‘What I want to know from my biology friends is just how fast does this evolution have to happen before they stop calling it evolution?’ Darwin said nature takes no sudden leaps. Yet here’s a huge leap—which is what intelligent agents cause. Consequently, the Cambrian explosion provides not just a negative case against Darwinian evolution, but also a compelling positive argument for design.”

“All right,” I said, “I asked for half a dozen examples. What would be the sixth?” Meyer thought for a moment. “I’d say human consciousness certainly supports a theistic view of human nature,” he said. “Judaism clearly teaches that we are more than just matter—we’re not a ‘computer made of meat,’ in the words of Marvin Minsky, but we’re made in God’s image. “We have the capacity for self-reflection, for representational art, for language, for creativity. Science can’t account for this kind of consciousness merely from the interaction of physical matter in the brain. Where did it come from? Again, I think theism provides the best explanation.” Meyer scooted to the edge of his chair. “So what we have here,” he said, wrapping up his impromptu presentation in a tone of urgency, “is an ensemble of half a dozen evidences that point to a transcendent, intelligent cause. This is mind- boggling stuff! Scientists in the nineteenth century weren’t aware of these things when they said naturalism accounts for everything. Thanks to the discoveries of the last five decades, we know a lot more today.” “Based on the evidence you’ve mentioned,” I said, “how do you complete the case for God?” “First, theism, with its concept of a transcendent Creator, provides a more causally adequate explanation of the Big Bang than a naturalistic explanation can offer,” he said. “The cause of the universe must transcend matter, space, and time, which were brought into existence with the Big Bang. The Jewish God has precisely this attribute of transcendence. Yet naturalism, by definition, denies the existence of any entity beyond the closed system of nature. “The fine-tuning of the physical laws and constants of the universe and the precise configuration of its initial conditions, dating back to the very origin of the universe itself, suggest the need for a cause that’s intelligent. Theism affirms the existence of an entity that’s not only transcendent but intelligent as well—namely, God.

Why Did Yitzchak Insist That We Can't Be Judged For What We Did At Night?

Continuing from the previous posts [explaining the gemara on Shabbos 89]:

Yitzchak argues that of the 50 years left [20 have already been deducted because the בית דין של מעלה doesn't judge people less than 20 years old], 25 of them were nights and should be deducted. So all Hashem has left to judge are 25 years.

The question is - How can we deduct nights? People sin at night too??!

Night time is not a time of social interaction [in the good old days before electricity, at which point night turned into day]. Thus, night is not a time when the Jewish people as a nation are sinning. During the day when we interact with each other some blemishes of the nation are revealed. But at night, all sins are personal and individual and don't relate to the nation as a whole. Since Hashem is judging us as a nation, Yitzchak rightfully argued that 25 years [which constitute the nights of 50 years] should be deducted from the judgment.

Teenagers Aren't Fully Responsible

In the previous post, we saw that Yitzchak's argument was that sin is not innate to  the Jewish people but is rather something external to their essential persona.

He continues and argues "Moreover, how much have they sinned? How many are the years of man? Seventy. Subtract twenty, for which you don't punish [and] there remain fifty."

The human court punishes for sins from the age of 13 but that is only in order to preserve the social framework. If we don't punish from the age of 13, we will have a lot of teenagers running amok doing wild things. So we have to punish wrongdoers. But until one is 20, he is not held accoutable by the heavenly court because his real, mature self is not actualized until he is 20. Thus, Yitzchak argues that all the sins that the Jews did until the age of 20 can't be counted.

Our True Identity

In the gemara in Shabbos [89, quoted here], Hashem says to Yitzchak "Your children sinned". Yitzchak answers "My children and not your children? When they preceded נעשה to נשמע you called them בני בכורי and now they are my sons and not yours??"

Two questions:

1] It is interesting to note that when the Jews said נעשה ונשמע at Har Sinai, Hashem did NOT call them בני בכורי, but much earlier when they were still in מצרים!! So what does the gemara mean when it says that when the Jews said נעשה ונשמע Hashem called them בני בכורי?

Pilei Plaos!! What is going on here??

2] Also - why is it significant that they were called בני בכורי when they said נעשה ונשמע [which they weren't - but that is what the gemara says]. Yitzchak could have just said that they were called בני בכורי so how can you [Hashem] call them my sons and not yours?? Why is it important that they said נעשה ונשמע. All Yitzchak is trying to prove is that we are Hashem's children and for that בני בכורי suffices?!

Every person has two parts to him or her. 1] His essential identity and self. That is immutable and unchanging regardless of the circumstances. 2] External behaviors and actions that aren't necessarily a reflection of their true selves.

Yes, said Yitzchak, the Jews sinned. But that is not who they truly are. The true most essential expression of their being and persona was revealed at Har Sinai when they said first said נעשה  - we will do. No questions asked. Then נשמע - we will hear and hear and hear. Always ready to fulfill the will of our Father and Creator.  That is who we truly are. Hashem already said בני בכורי much earlier but this was only revealed in a concrete way when we said נעשה ונשמע.

So Yitzchak's argument was that they remain your children no matter what because they revealed their true connection to you at Har Sinai that you already knew about before when you said בני בכורי.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

In the sefer Ayn Ayah, the Rav writes as follows:

The Exalted Neshama

The exalted neshama must push away all lowly qualities. The pleasure of the light of understanding elevates a person from the depths of servitude to imagination to which he is constantly connected. A clear mind cannot be established unless the dross of softness of heart [i.e. fear], of flattery and self deception, is removed from within a person.

As the Rav ztz"l says:

A person lives in the world of imagination. For example, he imagines [without realizing] how a certain food will taste good and then he has to eat it. He then descends into a world of hedonism where life becomes just about pleasure. There are degrees to this, some people more some less, but to a certain extent we are all subjugated to our imagination. We deceive ourselves that we are spiritual people when we are often not aware how bound we are to our physicality and desire for pleasures.

On Yom Kippur we attempt to rise above our bodies and imagination. We face ourselves for who we really are and thereby stop deceiving ourselves and do teshuva shleima.

Serving Hashem With Nature And Mind

Animals exist based on their natural instincts. They are able to survive and overcome obstacles due to their natural capacities. Human beings as well live based on what comes most naturally. Babies, for example, are able to exist because they naturally know how to eat, breath and relieve themselves.

As the intellect develops, one's decisions are based less on nature and more on the what makes sense and is logical. So, for example, an adult may naturally want to eat something, but he knows that this food will harm his body so he won't eat it. A man naturally wants to live with a woman but his intellect tells him that this is an expensive undertaking so he better wait until he has more money [or she has more money:-)]. The intellect isn't always correct. Many people make poor decisions. But the point is that mankind has come to a point when many decisions are no longer made based solely on one's innate nature but on how his mind decides.

In the olden days EVERYONE was religious. There were many religions but everybody joined at least one of them. People were following the natural human instinct to seek G-d and meaning. But then science, technology and industry developed and people felt less bound to their nature and more to their intellects. These intellects often decided that there is no G-d or that there is but it doesn't really matter practically. That is why there are so many atheists and agnostics in our world. They are denying their souls natural yearning for G-d because of the dictates of what their mind [albeit misguided and false] is telling them.

This is a positive process because now man must come to a point where his intellect works in concert with his natural inclinations and his service of G-d is predicated both on an innate natural need to connect to the source of his soul in addition to the mind being convinced that this Supreme Reality truly exists. So it is no longer just instinct but a much more firm, two-pronged connection to Hashem - nature plus intellect. In the end man MUST come to Emunah because it is so stongly embedded in his soul.
