The same applies to people "on the derech". People sit on the train or on the airplane and they are challenged. What to do now? There is a vacuum. Nothing to do and no place to go. What do MOST people do?
They give their undivided attention to the little machine in their hands.
Better - LEARN!! גדול תלמוד תורה יותר מהצלת נפשות - Learning is GREATER than saving a life! Why waste one's time w/ nonsense when one can do better than saving a human life.
The challenge is to believe what Chazal say. That Talmud Torah is really better than saving a life.
