Continuing a theme we have been discussing recently on these pages:
HaRav Yehuda Henkin recently passed away. He was a Rav and Posek who studied with his grandfather HaRav Eliyahu Henkin ztz"l [who besides being one of the greatest poskim in America, also distributed millions of dollars in Tzdaka as the director of Ezras Torah].
His wife related in her eulogy that he brought two suits with him to Israel when they moved here almost 50 years ago and never bought another one. He really felt that all he needed were those two suits so why should he buy more?! Now, this means that when he married off all of his children he wore his regular old suit.
I have a psychological explanation: People who are always looking to buy more stuff do so b/c they feel an emotional void. They think - erringly - that buying something will fill it. That is also why people overeat. It comes from an emotional lacking.
Rabbi Henkin was filled with Torah and chesed. He didn't need or want another suit b/c it would have served no purpose.
We too can be like that. We can fill ourselves with Torah, chesed, Tefillah etc. and then we won't need to buy so much or eat so much.
