The gemara in Sanhedrin says that one might think that a female kohen is punished with the more severe [according to Rebbi Shimon] שריפה for chilul shabbos unlike a male kohen [who will receive the lighter סקילה] because we find a leniency regarding shabbos that a male kohen is permitted to violate shabbos when he performs the avodah which doesn't apply to female kohanos who don't serve.
Asked the great Gaon Rav Yitzchak Schmelkes in his Beis Yitzchok: Female kohanos MAY violate the shabbos in the Beis Hamikdash because שחיטה is permitted for women [Zevachim 31b]! So what is meant by the distinction the gemara makes between male and female kohanim? They both may violate shabbos in the Beis Hamikdash.
