I am averse [a pasuk, by the way, is ALSO a verse] to ever saying "Hashem is telling us...." because - How do I know? מהיכי תיתי!!! A Navi can know. But a mere mortal who enjoys vanilla ice cream and often daydreams during davening? All I know is that the Torah tells me to be a good boy and I better keep working at that b/c that is why I am here.
One of the most important theological statements I have ever encountered [IMHO] is this:
עיקר האמונה היא בגדולת שלמות אין סוף. שכל מה שנכנס בתוך הלב הרי זה ניצוץ בטל לגמרי לגבי מה שראוי להיות משוער, ומה שראוי להיות משוער אינו עולה כלל בסוג של ביטול לגבי מה שהוא באמת. אם אומרים על דבר הטוב או על דבר החסד, המשפט, הגבורה, התפארת, וכל מה שהוא חיים ופאר החיים, או על דבר האמונה והאלהות, - הכל הוא מה שהנשמה כוספת במקוריותה למעלה מן הכל. גם כל השמות והכנוים, בין העבריים ובין הלועזיים, אינם נותנים כי אם ניצוץ קטן וכהה מאור הצפון, שהנשמה שוקקת לו ואומרת לו : "אלהים".
Or more simply:
"כי לא מחשבותי מחשבותיכם".
So, interpreting events in a definitive way is out of our pay grade. We just know in general that Hashem wants us to do teshuva b/c the Torah tells us so.
That being said it is hard for me to shake the feeling that Hashem is sending a loud and clear message that secular college is not for His Jewish children. Certainly not living on campus. Now we know how Halachically problematic college is but since mere סעיפים in Shulchan Aruch didn't do the trick He is sending the message via the open, vile, Jew hatred on so many campuses.
It is like the Nuremberg laws. We wanted to assimilate - the Germans were sent to remind us that we are Jews. [Against - just speculation.]
