Some rabbis are of the opinion that in order to save the Jewish people we have to convert people [such as non-Jewish Russians immigrants] en masse - even if they have no intentions to keep mitzvos.
Many poskim hold that even בדיעבד such a geirus is invalid. But even if one says that בדיעבד it counts - is it really for the benefit of Klal Yisroel to convert hundreds of thousands of people who will live like Goyim??
There is one well known rabbi who was so intent on converting as many people as possible that he signed his name on their conversion documents as if he was one of the supervising rabbis when in fact he wasn't. He was censured by the then Chief Rabbi but continued. He was called a רשע and אפיקורוס by another בית דין but that didn't deter him.
Unfortunate.
