Different Strokes For Different Folks

TZIDKUS!

Rav Goren in his autobiography relates some many fascinating stories. He related about Rav Kook:

1] He was once invited to speak at a ceremony [הנחת אבן פינה לשוכנת עץ חיים] and was screamed down by a member of Neturei Karta "GET DOWN RASHA". The heckler was taken away by the police. The Rav ztz"l said that he is not continuing until he is released....

2] One Purim, a zealot made a doll in the likeness of the Rav, put it in the local shul and had people shoot at it. 32 of the most Chashuv Rabbonim signed a letter demanding that he be excommunicated until he ask the Rav forgiveness. Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer never davened in this shul again even though it was his shul and his Nusach and instead davnened in the other Nusach Sfard shul as a protest for the kavod of the Rav.

3] He went to America in 1924 to raise money for the poor of EY and Europe [they stayed on 76th street on the Upper West Side] together w/ 2 other Gedolim [see link!!]. Yet, he didn't say the word "money" or anything like that. He just spoke about Torah, Kedusha, E.Y. etc. and hoped people would get the point...

4] A letter from him was very helpful to fundraisers. Zealots who made his life miserable would come to him for such letters - and he wouldn't hesitate to write the letter...

Life Without Ideals Is Worse Than The Life Of An Animal

Of Shelters And Fortresses

I dealt with this over Shabbos:

I shall say of the Hashem [that He is] my shelter and my fortress, my God in Whom I trust. [Tehillim 91-2]

What is the difference between a "shelter" and a "fortress" in this context?? Just say one of them?! And OF COURSE if He is my shelter then I can trust Him??!

Coronavirus Parties

Gothamist.com

A series of recent teen parties celebrating high school graduations have caused a "mini surge" of COVID-19 cases in Greenwich, Connecticut, and prompted state officials to issue a fresh round of warnings to families.

The town’s health department reported 47 new cases in the last week, more than half of which were between the ages of 16 and 21, according to the Greenwich Sentinel. Town officials are expected to meet next week to discuss the issue. “We’re done with warnings,” First Selectman Fred Camillo said on Tuesday. “We’re going to take action.”

Currently, the rules in Connecticut limit indoor gatherings to 25 people, and outdoor gatherings to 100 people. In both cases, social distancing and face coverings are required.

Through contact tracing, the health department has been able to determine that many of the teen cases can be linked to large parties held in town between July 15th and 19th. “Younger kids think they’re immune to it and they can fight it. In many cases they are, but the concern has always been they’re going to come into contact with people who have compromised immune systems,” Camillo added.

News of the gatherings in Greenwich have drawn extra attention given the town’s standing as one of the country’s most affluent communities, dotted with hedge-lined mega-mansions. On Friday, the New York Times ran a story with the headline: “In Ultra-Wealthy Greenwich, Teen Parties Lead to Jump in Virus Cases.”

The paper reported that the recent infections were linked to parties attended by “seniors who had just finished their final year at two elite private college-preparatory schools, Greenwich Academy and the Brunswick School, as well as the local public high school, Greenwich High School.”

A player on the Greenwich High School football team tested positive, forcing other players into quarantine, while roughly a dozen students at a private school did not show up at their graduation ceremony on Saturday because they had come into contact with someone who had tested positive. Even a country club shut down after a swim coach was potentially exposed.

Contract tracers have had some trouble getting the full extent of the outbreak however — some teens have refused to discuss whether they went to the parties, and some said "they had been told by their parents not to share information about the parties."

There's also reportedly been a similar outbreak of COVID infections in nearby Darien, Connecticut, after five people between the ages of 10 and 19 tested positive for the virus on one day. “It’s summertime,” Jayme Stevenson, the first selectman of Darien, told the Times. “It’s beach weather. People are out on boats. They are having parties. And I think they are beginning to let their guard down. It’s critically important that young people understand that they can get the virus and they can spread the virus.”

Across the country, reports of large gatherings by young people have drawn concern and condemnation. Last weekend, New Jersey police broke up a 700-person house party in Ocean County, where one witness said she saw “packs of kids, young adults.” NJ Governor Phil Murphy has blamed these indoor house parties for the growing number of coronavirus cases in the state; there have been more than 2,000 cases over the past four days alone.

"When there are hundreds of people crammed into a house where the air conditioning system is simply blowing the air around and where people are not wearing face coverings, you have also invited coronavirus to your party," said Governor Murphy.

Mitzvos Shouldn't Be Self-Serving

One often hears and reads people saying why it is worthwhile to keep mitzvos. Example: One graduate of one of the post high school Israel programs came back for a visit and made a siyum masechta. He, with his long hair [nothing against long hair. My daughters have long hair and I totally adore them!] told the boys that it is worthwhile to learn Gemara b/c it makes you smarter in business.... [He neglected to mention that if you get into Rav Rosensweig's very challenging shiur in YU, you really improve your standing with the shtark meidlach in Stern... Or so they say:-)].

No. We learn Torah b/c it is רצון השם.

It is GREAT to keep Shabbos, we hear, b/c one can turn off technology for a day.

No. We keep Shabbos b/c that is the רצון השם.

There are people who take a "digital Sabbath" From sundown Friday night until dark on Sat. night they don't use anything related to social media. So they cook, drive, write etc. etc. but no phone. That is where the utilitarian attitude towards mitzvos can lead one. One sees what they personally get out of it and acts accordingly, ignoring the actual Laws and - more significantly - the Lawgiver.

Even the letz we recently spoke about, after calling religion silly, added that he can see how various laws, such as sitting shiva, really add to the quality of life. All about ME.

Our generation is a VERY self centered and coddled one so the notion of sacrificing for a Higher Authority is foreign.

This is from a 1976 Tradition article written by Prof. Zev Harvey:

While the Torah, from its beginning to its end, commands us to fulfill the needs of others, our observance of the commandments of the Torah must not be toward the end of fulfilling our own needs. The mitsvot are not means toward an end: they are the service of God for its own sake. We abstain from pig not because we fear it is unhealthful, for that would be the worship of our stomachs, not God. We observe the Sabbath not because Philo, Josephus, or contemporary sociologists have convinced us that it has social benefits, for that would be the worship of society, not God. We observe the laws of taharat ha-mishpahah not for the sake of improving our marital relations ("the recurring honeymoon"), for that would be the worship of sex, not God. Our rule is that of Antigonos, the man of Sokho: "Be not like servants who serve their master in order to get a reward, but be like servants who serve their master not in order to get a reward . . .". "Happy is the man . . . who delights greatly in His commandments" (Ps. 112:1); our Rabbis underscored "in His commandments, not in the reward of His commandments!".

"Said Rabbi Dostai bar Yanai: 'Why did the Omnipresent not create hot springs in Jerusalem like the hot springs of Tiberias?' " Why should the Holy City not merit what Tiberias merits? Answer: "So that a man not say to his friend, "Let us go up in pilgrimage to Jerusalem; if we go up but for the sake of one bath, it will suffice us.' There would thus result a pilgrimage not for its own sake ['aliyah she-lo li-shmah] !"

Our rabbis contrasted two kinds of Torah: Torah for its own sake (li-shmah) vs. Torah not for its own sake (she-enah li-shmah). They significantly called the former the Torah of Love (shel hesed) and the latter the Torah which is Not of Love (she-enah shel hesed). The true servant of God is the servant in love (oved me-ahavah), his is the Torah of Love, whose commandments are not means but ends, whose commandment "Love your neighbor as yourself" does not make its claim upon us on the basis of psychotherapeutic or socio-moral considerations (e.g., that we will feel good, attain peace of mind, overcome our hang ups, win friends, or achieve peace in our cities), but solely on the basis of its being a Divine command: Love your neighbor as yourself: I am Hashem."

To add: The Ramban in this past week's parsha [

Odd?

There is a famous aphorism [attributed to William Norman Ewer, d. 1977] -

How odd of G-d/ To choose the Jews.

There are various responses to this.

One is -

Not odd of G-d / Goyim annoy'im

According to the Ramban, we can answer -

"Not odd, you clod /The Jews chose G-d"

Here the issue is explored.

To add a source not mentioned in the shiur:
