גבורה מיוחדת היא גבורתם של ישראל לא בכיבושים שמכבשים את האחרים... אלא בגבורה שבעיקרה היא קשורה, בכיבוש שהאדם כובש את עצמו... גבורת הנשמה האלוקית... זאת היא הגבורה האזורה לישראל...

במסכת אבות (פרק ד, א) משנים חז"ל את תפיסת העולם הרגילה וקובעים: "איזהו גיבור? הכובש את יצרו, שנאמר "טוב ארך אפים מגיבור ומושל ברוחו מכובש עיר". (משלי טז, לב)
הגבורה מיוחסת אם כן דווקא להתאפקות ולכבישת היצר ולא לעשייה זוהרת.
שהרי אנשים רגילים לייחס את הגבורה למעשה אקטיבי בולט וחריג , מתוך כך שלכל אדם יש רצון ויצר עז ליצור ולפעול, אך תוצאות יצר זה יכולות להיות גם שליליות, קלקול והרס.
מעלת האדם היא בכך שהוא שולט על נטיות חייו ועל יצריו , ורק האדם כובש היצר הגס הזה יכול לפעול בדברים חיוביים, וזו היא הגבורה האדירה.
כמעלת האדם הפרטי כך מעלתו של הכלל , היינו גבורת העם בחייו.
ברכת "אוזר ישראל בגבורה" משמעה שאור אלוקי מאיר עליו, ומתוך גבורת הנשמה האלוקית
וזו של ההכרה בכוחות העליונים , והתגברותו וכיבושו את יצריו , מוביל ויוביל עם ישראל בגבורה
את כל נצחונותיו שבכל הדורות.
The courage of Israel is a special kind of courage. Not in the conquests that conquer others... But with strength which is primarily related, in the conquest where man conquers himself... The strength of the divine soul... This is the strength that is girded for Israel...

In the Mishnah (Ethics of the Fathers, Chapter 4, Verse 1), the Sages change the usual worldview and state: "Who is a hero? He who conquers his passions, as it is said, "Better a patient man than a warrior, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city." (Proverbs 16:32)
Heroism is thus attributed precisely to self-control and the suppression of instinct, and not to glorious action.
For people are accustomed to attributing heroism to a prominent and exceptional active deed, because every person has a strong desire and drive to create and act. However, the results of this drive can also be negative, leading to corruption and destruction.
The greatness of man lies in his ability to control his life's inclinations and his passions. Only a person who conquers this coarse instinct can act in positive ways, and this is the mighty heroism.
As the merit of the individual is, so is the merit of the whole, meaning the strength of the people in their lives.
The blessing "Who girds Israel with strength" means that Divine light shines upon him, and from the strength of the divine soul.
This one, of recognizing the higher powers, and overcoming and conquering his desires, will lead and will continue to lead the people of Israel with strength to all their victories throughout all generations.
