One way to insure one's personal integrity is to have someone watching over you. The ideal person for this task is a "Rebbi". When someone is subordinate to a Rebbi he is much less likely to veer from the path. The PROBLEM is that many many Jews today consider Rav Soloveitchik their Rebbi. He was indeed a great man and gadol bi-Torah but he is no longer alive. Having a non-living Rebbi only is a recipe for disaster. Same goes for Lubavitchers and Breslovers. A person needs a LIVING, BREATHING Rebbi with whom to consult and ideally to whom one can nullify himself.
Many people today do and say strange things because their Rebbi is no longer alive and they have free reign to be wacky. If Rav Soloveitchik, for example, were alive, many of the things we hear about would not be happening. Sadly, there is no real acknowledged gadol in the US and that is the cause of much friction and divergence from the path of our tradition.
Case in point: At least two of R"S' students are ordaining women rabbis - if he were around he would denounce it and that would be the end of it.
A similar negative phenomena exists with the Sfardim. As long as Chacham Ovadia was alive people were subordinate to him and there was relative peace in the Sefardi camp. After he died all he-- broke loose.
Lesson: Get and Rebbi and be mevatel yourself to him!
