לזכות ר' יצחק יונה בן חנה לבריאת איתנה
It says at the beginning of Shulchan Aruch that it is fitting for all those who fear heaven to feel pain and anguish over the destruction of the beis hamikdash - ראוי לכל ירא שמים להיות מיצר ודואג על חורבן בית המקדש.
Everybody asks: Only one who has yiras shomayim should feel the pain of the churban? EVERYONE should!
Answered the Holy Piltzer: כל זמן שאין לו יראת שמים האלט ער נישט ביי ענייני בית המקדש - As long as someone doesn't have yiras shomayim he is very far from feeling the loss of the Beis Hamikdash.
The Beis Hamikdash was a place of intense connection with Hashem. There are really not many people who pine for a deeper connection to Hashem. People are too caught up in their businesses, bank accounts, social lives, myriad of problems, hobbies, sports teams, iphones-smartphones-cellphones-blackberry's-other-toys, cars, vacations etc. etc.
Some people even learn but that is just part of the daily routine and has little to do with Hashem and dveykus.
Our job as we get closer to the days of mourning over the beis hamikdash is to try to feel the tzaar ha-shchina, to be conscious of how absent Hashem is from the world and to yearn for the reappearance of kavod shomayim.
