The Contribution Of Advertising To Man's Unhappiness

Think about it. Everything is JUST FINE. Then you see an advertisement. They spent millions of dollars researching how to convince you to feel unsatisfied unless you buy their product. You see the ad and you decide that you really need that item. They were successful.

You were very happy. You walk by a storefront window and suddenly you feel that you would be happier if you bought the item in the window. But you can't right now. Nice day ruined:).

If you are a woman, you have jewelry. You walk by a store and see a STUNNING diamond necklace. Suddenly, you have this burning desire to own this necklace. It would look SOOOO good on you. But alas, you don't have an extra 15k lying around for random necklaces in storefront windows. Nor does your husband. If you are not married you also feel the pain of not having that husband to buy you that necklace. In every Ksuba, Jewish men promise to purchase for their wives diamond necklaces..... Not exactly, but you catch my drift. [When people want to make me feel important they have me sign this document].

You are a man. You drive a car. It drives FINE. You see an advertisement for a new car with soooo many additional features. You WANT that car. You work HARD for your money but it is now going for a car that you really don't need.

Madison Avenue wins. Two points.

After you buy whatever item it is that you crave you will see an advertisement offering you a BETTER item at a lower price....

Come our Sages and in one sentence, save you a fortune and provide peace of mind. איזהו עשיר? השמח בחלקו. Look at what you ALREADY have. Enjoy it. Savor it.

Love and blessings:)
