"Is not man's life on earth a [fixed term of] service? And all his sustenance comes from a fixed principal — day by day its measure diminishes. This world is like a corridor [leading to the next]. It conceals from oneself all the commandments of God and places him in the ranks of the gluttons who say, 'Eat and drink...' — and there is no difference at all between him and complete wicked people. Anyone who could occupy himself with Torah for even one hour and does not do so — the very essence of his sin is a light act in deed, but in the depth of the soul's secret, it is Epicureanism [apikorsus/heresy].
