The Gemara [Nazir 12] says that if one sent a shaliach to be mekadesh a woman without specifying which woman and the shaliach died - he is assur to all of the women in the world [because everyone could be a forbidden relative of his wife].
Asked the Pleisi - The Gemara [Bava Basra 23] teaches about a concept called קרוב - that we follow whoever is closer. That is why the closest town brings the עגלה ערופה - we assume that the unknown murderer was from the closest town. So why don't we assume that the woman was from the closest town and not from anywhere further away???
