People Would Rather Die Than Change

In "Immunity to Change: How to Overcome It and Unlock the Potential in Yourself and Your Organization" (Boston, 2009 - in case anyone happens to be in Boston in 2009 you can pick up  copy), authors Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey cite a study showing just how resistant people are to change: “When doctors tell heart patients they will die if they don’t change their habits, only one in seven will be able to follow through successfully. Desire and motivation aren’t enough; even when it’s literally a matter of life or death, the ability to change remains maddeningly elusive.”
