There are numerous ideas that have come into vogue in recent history - some in the last few years, others even in the last few months. It gets to a point where so many people are saying the same thing that the ideas become axiomatic and to say otherwise is to be considered crazy, extreme and many other pejorative terms.
It is worth remembering how many people were CONVINCED that Communism would save the world. After the countless millions killed, starved, tortured [until our very day in places like China] and exiled to such exotic venues such as Siberia, most people have sobered up and realized its falsehood and evil.
Then there were the Yiddishists who gave up religion and tradition for Yiddish literature and entertainment. Not too many of those left. Back in the day, Yiddish theater was the THING! Today? The only people speaking Yiddish are the Chasidim and the shiurim in some Litvishe Yeshivos are delivered in Yiddish - and those people don't attend theater.
Then there were the secular Zionists. Very few of those left. Most of the descendants of the original secular Zionists now believe that the Arabs have the right to their own State - in Israel. True, classical secular Zionism is more or less dead.
Then there were the socialists. Socialism is going to save the world. Not.
Further back in history people thought that the Enlightenment would liberate man and make for a much better society. 200 years later look at the world. Look at how much evil there is. Look at how empty most people's lives are. Enlightenment thinkers in Britain, in France and throughout Europe questioned traditional authority and embraced the notion that humanity could be improved through rational change. Europe today is in shambles spiritually. It is filled with anti-semitism and G-dless. Humanity doesn't get better when there is no G-d in people's lives.
So we should be very wary of new ideas. A true and tried tradition of 5,000 years is a safer route. The new ideas should be scrutinized and the good should be extracted and the negative discarded.
