Rav Shaul Alter Shlita was speaking to a Yeshivish crowd in Baltimore and was asked for an explanation that one could offer as to why Charedim don't serve in the army.

He understood that whatever he said it would upset and even alienate people. The goal is to unite and not to create more divisiveness. So he took the fifth [even though I am sure he doesn't know that it is the fifth...].
