בזכות נטילת ידים

 מחנה אבנזה אוסטריה שלהי חורף תש"ה 

במחנה הוטל איסור חמור על האסירים להשתמש במים למרות שהמים מצויים היו בשפע רב. שבועות רבים לא באו מי שתייה לפי, אולם לא ויתרתי על נטילה לפני תפילה ואכילה. פעם נתפסתי על כך כעונש הוכנסתי ע"י מפקד המחנה האכזר לתוך אמבטיית מים קפואים במטרה להמיתני באופן מופלא ממש בטרם קפאתי למוות הופיע משרתו היהודי של מפקד המחנה והלה בישר לצורר שעליו להתייצב בדחיפות בפני מפקדיו. למשרת יהודי זה ניתנה הוראה חמורה להותירני במים לעוד רבע שעה ואז יצא המרצח האכזר לדרכו באותן דקות נוספות הייתי נופח לבטח את נשמתי אבל למרות ההוראה החמורה הניח לי היהודי לצאת החוצה מיידית ובכך הציל את חיי ממוות בטוח. זכות המצווה של נטילת ידיים ודאי הגינה עלי להינצל ממוות לחיים.

Ebensee Camp, Austria – Late Winter 1945

In the camp, a strict prohibition was imposed on the prisoners against using water, even though it was available in great abundance. For many weeks, not a drop of drinking water touched my lips; however, I did not waive the ritual washing of hands (Netilat Yadayim) before prayer and eating.

Once, I was caught doing so. As punishment, the cruel camp commander placed me inside a tub of freezing water with the intent to kill me. In a truly miraculous way, just before I froze to death, the commander's Jewish servant appeared and informed the oppressor that he must report urgently to his superiors.

The Jewish servant was given a strict order to leave me in the water for another fifteen minutes, and then [after giving the order] the cruel murderer went on his way. During those additional minutes, I surely would have perished, but despite the severe order, the Jew allowed me to climb out immediately—thereby saving my life from certain death. Surely, the merit of the commandment of washing one's hands protected me, allowing me to be saved from death for life.
