The Rambam [3/8] classifies [among others] two type of kofrim - כופר בפירושה ומכחיש מגידיה, one who denies the Torah She-bial Peh, or who casts aspersions on the character and nature of chachomim, is a kofer.
The mishna in pirkei avos says - ברוך שבחר בהם ובמשנתם, Blessed [is He] who chose them and their teachings. This parallels the two types of kofrim: בחר בהם - He chose them and therefore one may not be מכחיש מגידיה. In addition בחר במשנתם - He chose their teachings as binding.
