A Puzzling Word To Start The Yad Hachazaka - Maybe A Little Bit Of Arabic Thrown In? - Ignorant People With Phd's

The Rambam begins his magnum opus, the י"ד החזקה, with the words

יסוד היסודות ועמוד החכמות לידע שיש שם מצוי ראשון  -

the foundation of foundations and pillars of wisdoms is to know that there is שם a Primordial being.

שם.

The Rambam would have read BEAUTIFULLY without the word שם, so what does it mean. G-d is "there"? Where is there?? Isn't Hashem EVERYWHERE!!!

One could suggest as follows - the word שמים doesn't mean "sky". It really means what is "out there", what is beyond us. Since the sky is above us we understand it to mean sky but its real meaning is what is beyond our reality. So maybe the Rambam is telling us that יש שם מצוי ראשון - Hashem is beyond us.

The truth is that the Kesef Mishna was bothered by this שם as were many many others. What makes it more troubling is that that the Rambam uses this word in many different contexts [where my explanation wouldn't work, such as where it says in Hil. Taanis 5/1 that there are שם days when we fast. So much for that....]

He writes:

He says that it CAN'T mean a certain place because Hashem is here, Hashem is there, Hashem is truly everywhere. Even the Rambam went to kindergarten and learned that...

So maybe it has the same meaning as a soft פ"א [the letter] in Arabic. What does THAT mean? I looked around. Some sefarim say that it means "existence". Another sefer explained that in Arabic the soft "פ"א" is a filler word like הנה or the like.

The sefer משרת משה writes as follows:

See what R' Kapach writes in his commentary on the Rambam. He understood and spoke Arabic fluently and says that the author of the Kesef Mishna could not have written that it is like a soft פ"א in Arabic. See there for why.

In the Frankel Rambam [ילקוט שינוי נוסחאות] he notes that there is a manuscript where the word "שם" is omitted.

Any insight would be appreciated.

BTW - One can have a Phd in astrophysics and microbiology and fifteen other subjects but if he doesn't KNOW there there is a primordial being who brought the world into existence then he is missing the foundation and all of his knowledge is worthless.

In addition - ראשית חכמה יראת השם!! It is not enough to KNOW G-d, one must fear Him too:-). Not just the simple fear of the consequences of his actions but elevated יראת הרוממות - awe of his exaltedness.
