There are many people [usually women] who lack nothing material, yet they are CONSTANTLY going shopping. Their fridges are full, their closets are filled with clothing for every occasion. They have all of the gadgets, machines, furniture etc. etc. that they need. So why do they shop so much?
The answer is simple. They are empty inside. So they shop in order to fill that lacuna. But it never gets filled because what they buy is not what they are missing and what they are missing can't be bought with money.
So they keep shopping, their husbands grumble when they get the credit card bill, the economy continues to boom - and their souls remain famished ....
You want to save money? Seek out spiritual and emotional satisfaction. You want to save even more money? Seek out more of the same. Cultivate relationships, read meaningful books, engage in chesed, focus on others. Those things cost nothing and make life worthwhile.
Eitza Tova: Before you make any purchase, ask yourself WHY you are buying this item and how would you manage without it. If you can manage without and the purchase won't make the world a better place - push it off for another day.
Eitza Tova number two: Put away your money and credit cards in inconvenient places. This way - spending money will require effort which is an incentive to take the easy way out and not spend.
