On January 7, devastating wildfires broke out near Los Angeles, California. To date, more than 10 people have lost their lives, over 200,000 have been evacuated, and thousands of homes, possibly tens of thousands, have burned to ashes. What is particularly striking is that most of the damage occurred in affluent neighborhoods, affecting many Hollywood stars. Reports indicate that over 20 celebrities lost their homes.
Interestingly, just two days before the fires started, something remarkable happened in Los Angeles, precisely where the wildfires are now raging. Some are linking the two events, suggesting that the fires might be a result of this prior occurrence.
On January 5, a Sunday and just two days before the fires began, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place in Beverly Hills at the Hilton Hotel. Hollywood’s elite gathered there—young and old stars, representing both the old guard and the new generation.
As is common at such events, controversies arose. First, there was the appearance of a bearded man, Jonathan Van Ness, wearing a dress. Such displays, involving transgender individuals or men in women’s clothing, are becoming routine at these festivals and hardly surprise anyone anymore.
Second, and more notably, the event’s host, comedian and actress Nikki Glaser, made some striking remarks during her closing summary. Addressing the audience while summarizing the awards, she highlighted an unusual detail that sparked online debate and went viral.
She noted:
“Let’s recap whom the winners thanked in their acceptance speeches tonight, as is customary.”
She listed: teams and assistants were thanked 11 times. Mothers were mentioned by three winners:
“Thank you, Mom, for helping me become who I am. I’m here today receiving this award because of you.”
Then, she pointed out:
“And God, the Creator of the Universe, wasn’t thanked a single time.”
The room erupted in laughter.
She added:
“Well, what did you expect? This is a godless city.”
The audience laughed even harder. Imagine the scene: Hollywood’s most famous stars—the global elite—were all gathered there, laughing at the lack of mention of God.
Just two days later, something tragic happened. Many of these same people lost their homes; some were left homeless.
Who knows....
