Support Group Forming

For leaders whose enemies are doing everything they can to kick them out of office. Trump and Netanyahu have already joined. [BTW - they have a combined six wives. If they would have invested as much in their marriages as they do in trying to stay in office they would have been better off]. New members are welcome.

Topics covered: Dealing with ego deflation, responding to relentless attacks, maintaining self esteem and a sense of perspective [people are dying of cancer, others are blind and yet others have kidneys that don't work - being fired is comparatively nothing].

Conservative Heroes

Three of the major speakers on behalf of the conservative - right wing movement in the US are Ben Shapiro, Dennis Prager and Jordan Peterson. They have millions of followers and makes LOTS AND LOTS of money speaking publicly. When I am in that very small room that has no mezuza and where one is forbidden to learn Torah, I sometimes listen to them as well [beats counting the number of tiles on the bathroom walls or worrying about things that will never happen].

Ben is openly Orthodox [as evidenced by his kippah]. Unfortunately, some of his ideas are not true to the Torah, nor is the language he uses always appropriate and he makes no claims of being a Talmid Chochom or anything close. He is brilliant but unfortunately never spent any significant amount of time applying his sharp intellect to Torah. Had he done two years in Israel after high school and followed up with Yeshiva, he and the rest of the world would have benefited greatly. But alas he went to UCLA and then Harvard Law School, not places to hone one's Gemara skills. He also seems to totally buy in to "shittas Darwin". Evolution is not necessarily a contradiction to Torah, but since there are many scientific questions on the theory, why does he take the whole thing wholesale as if it is fact?

Prager is proudly Jewish and grew up in an Orthodox home although he is no longer frum. He says "I am religious but not Orthodox". The problem is that he made up the religion so it doesn't count for much. He believes that Yetzias Mitzraim happened and [I think] in Ma'amad Har Sinai as well but is not halachically observant. He talks a lot about how to have a happy marriage and like many experts  - he is on his 3rd wife. So I guess he learns by trial and error... He seems to think that he is much smarter and knowledgeable than he actually is but a lot of what he says makes sense. Like that the reason academics say so many stupid things is that ראשית חכמה יראת השם and since they lack Hashem in their lives they also lack common sense.

Peterson is not Jewish. He is a psychologist and I have long wondered why any depressed person [he claims to have counseled over 25 thousand people or something like that] would pay to see him when he strikes me as being one of the most depressive personalities I have ever listened to. He also comes across [at least to me] as being filled with anger and as hyper-hyper sensitive. He speaks to these huge crowds and seems to think that he is so brilliant [I probably would to if millions of people would listen to my talks]. He really says mostly simple things that are basic, common sense - like that men and woman are fundamentally different [which today is a hotly contested topic😕]. He wrote a best selling book which is also just common sense.

The truth is that by his own admission he battled depression for many years and was himself on anti depressant medication. He recently checked himself into rehab for addiction  to the anti anxiety drug clonazepam that he took to deal with his anxiety about his wife's cancer. He couldn't get off it and, as his daughter revealed in a recent video - he was a complete wreck, so he checked into rehab.

These people's value system is much closer to ours than those on the left ["conservative" is the belief that we should conserve traditional values]. They are against abortion and radical feminism, are in favor of traditional marriage [man with woman!!!] and family, believe that men and women are different. are patriotic and appreciate the gift of the USA, stress the importance of belief in G-d and the dangers and stupidity of atheism, are capitalists who don't believe that the rich should be forced by the government to hand over all of their hard earned money to support the poor etc. etc.

But bottom line, if you want really deep philosophy and psychology - listen to shiurim from Rav Moshe Shapiro, learn Maharal, Ramchal, Rav Kook and Alei Shor etc. etc. etc. What all of these popular speakers are saying is like 1st grade curriculum compared to our Giants teachings. Also, as human beings, we have so many Tzadikim to look up to who were and are such paragons of virtue. We don't need to look elsewhere, and even if we do, we will be disappointed.

We have our own heroes. They are the REAL DEAL!!

Parkinson's And Experts

I read a bio of a doctor I know where it said that he is an "expert" in Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's is a horrible disease. Baruch Hashem we have experts!!

The problem is that "experts" don't necessarily cure the disease. There are one million people in the US who have this dreadful disease. Where are the experts? I know people who have the disease. They just seem to be getting worse and worse - AFTER they went to the experts.

So here is my point: Modern medicine is WONDERFUL!!! Doctors? Many of them are WONDERFUL!! Some of my BEST FRIENDS are doctors. My father in law was a doctor - until the malach hamaves cut his career short. [He is now a TOP DOCTOR in the עולם שכולו טוב. For better or for worse, business is slow these days].

But doctors have limits. They haven't found a cure to the disease of all diseases - death [although in their merit, life expectancy has risen considerably]. They haven't found a cure to many other diseases. Hospitals all over the world are FILLED with suffering people. Some get better but many others don't and die. Those who do get better - it is just a matter of tie until the same or another disease will get them. Or the ravages of old age. NOBODY is free of that. Take ALLLLL the vitamins you want, exercise daily - it won't change things. Life is a process of slow death.

We Jews have a belief. Sickness and death are caused by sin. When we are cleansed of sin - we will be cleansed of death and disease. We must internalize this.

Someone Is Paying

I saw an ad "You shouldn't have to pay to pray. Come pray with us for free!!". SOUNDS GREAT!!! Instead of dropping hundreds of dollars on seating, you can daven for free and use the money for important things like Succos family outings to Six Flags [this is not a knock on family outings - or Six Flags for that matter]!!

But it is misleading and also an unfair implied criticism of shuls that do charge [like just about all of them].

The Democrats promise: FREE health care!!! FREE education!!!

Misleading.

NOTHING [with a few notable exceptions such as breathing] is FREE. The question is - who is paying? But SOMEONE is paying. [In this case - the rich will pay for the poor. Maybe you think that that such an arrangement is justified but don't tell me that it's free].

If you don't pay for your seat in the shul [which covers the shul's expenses throughout the year] then SOMEONE ELSE is going to pay. The shuls that advertise free seating are really saying "Why pay yourself for our space and services [תרתי משמע], when someone else will pay for it on your behalf?"

That is not the Jewish way. You benefited and it cost the shul money? Reimburse the shul for your benefit [if you can]. To pay is to not be a freeloader!!!!

Getting Attention

Scientific American

Social media is changing the character of our political conversations. As many have pointed out, our attention is a scarce resource that politicians and journalists are constantly fighting to attract, and the online world has become a primary trigger of our moral outrage. These two ideas, it turns out, are fundamentally related. According to our forthcoming paper, words that appeal to one’s sense of right and wrong are particularly effective at capturing attention, which may help explain this new political reality.

It occurred to us that the way people scroll through their social media feeds is very similar to a classic method psychologists use to measure people’s ability to pay attention. When we mindlessly browse social media, we are rapidly presenting a stream of verbal stimuli to ourselves. Psychologists have been studying this issue in the lab for decades, displaying to subjects a rapid succession of words, one after another, in the blink of an eye. In the lab, people are asked to find a target word among a collection of other words. Once they find it, there’s a short window of time in which that word captures their attention. If there’s a second target word in that window, most people don’t even see it—almost as if they had blinked with their eyes open.

There is an exception: if the second target word is emotionally significant to the viewer, that person will see it. Some words are so important to us that they are able to capture our attention even when we are already paying attention to something else.

We thought that perhaps moral words might be special in just this way, grabbing our attention even when it was allocated elsewhere. Indeed, we have previously found that people seem highly attuned to moral stimuli in the world around them. This result could help explain why people share certain moral content online: the words that appeal to our morality break through the noise on social media.

To test this idea, we ran a pair of experiments in the lab, using a task that intentionally mimicked Twitter feeds. People were presented with a rapid stream of fictitious tweets with different types of words used for a hashtag. We found that moral words (such as crime, mercy, right), emotional words (such as afraid, love, weep) and moral-emotional words (such as abuse, honor, spite) captured more attention than neutral ones (such as coast, novel, maze). This was even true when people had been focused on a prior term. That is, these moral and emotional words broke through the noise and grabbed subjects’ attention.

We then examined how this finding relates to sharing on Twitter. We analyzed a large data set containing Twitter conversations about political topics (specifically, gun control, same-sex marriage and climate change). These conversations were part of a previous paper we published, showing that messages with moral-emotional words were 20 percent more likely to be shared by another person on Twitter. We then asked whether the words that captured attention in the lab were the same ones that went viral on Twitter.

We analyzed nearly 50,000 Tweets that used words we had studied in our experiments. Some of them strongly captured attention, as measured by our attention task in the lab. Others were hardly noticeable. Most importantly, attentional capture was a robust predictor of sharing messages with these same words online. Moral and emotional words (such as lewd, kill, evil, faith and sin) were the most captivating. When they were embedded in tweets, they were significantly more likely to be shared as compared with neutral words. This was particularly striking because our measure of attention was based on an entirely different group of people than those who retweeted the messages.

A Little Knowledge Is Dangerous

A little philosophy, says my Lord Bacon, makes men atheists: A great deal reconciles them to religion. For men, being taught, by superstitious prejudices, to lay the stress on a wrong place; when that fails them, and they discover, by a little reflection, that the course of nature is regular and uniform, their whole faith totters, and falls to ruin. But being taught, by more reflection, that this very regularity and uniformity is the strongest proof of design and of a supreme intelligence, they return to that belief, which they had deserted; and they are now able to establish it on a firmer and more durable foundation.

SINAS CHINAM ??

One sometimes hears that if one says about a certain group of people that they are making a mistake in hashkfa, halacha or practice, that is or leads to sinas chinam. For example, if one says that Charedim in Israel are mistaken for not sending their children to the army then it is sinas chinam. If one says that the non-Charedim are mistaken for going to the army or to university then it is sinas chinam. If one says that it is wrong to live in Chutz La-aretz then it is sinas chinam to the Jews who live in Chutz La-aretz. The list goes on and on.

The truth is not like that. There is nothing wrong or hateful about disagreeing with other people. Are we supposed to not think? Not have opinions? Like, are we Jewish? OF COURSE we have opinions and we have every right to believe passionately that we are correct.

Sinas Chinam is just that - baseless hatred. It is not hateful to disagree with someone. Chabadniks generally think that the best way to Hashem is to be a Chabadnik. Everyone else is not doing it right. Do they hate other non-Chabad Jews? No. Modern Orthodox people believe that one must be responsible, get a job and support one's family. Does that mean that they hate people who sit in kollel and live off donations? No. Rav Ovadiah Yosef felt that all Jews in Eretz Yisrael must follow the rulings of the Beis Yosef. Does that mean that he hated those [almost everyone else] who don't? Of course not. The Satmar Rebbe felt that the State of Israel is evil and an act of the Satan. That didn't stop him from giving large sums of money to help people who thought otherwise.

So let us keep respectfully disagreeing and keep in mind the Mishna that states that a machlokes לשם שמים has a positive lasting effect.
