שלא עשני גוי

Every day we make a bracha thanking Hashem that we are not goyim. שלא עשני גוי. I have an idea - why don't we thank Hashem that we are Jewish?? I am not just happy that I am not a goy - I am ecstatic that I am Jewish. So, why can't I just say a bracha thanking Hashem for that??

Many answers have been offered. One is as follows: Before there was a world Hashem already had the Jewish people in mind. That means that all of existence is beneath the lofty stature of the Jewish People. We are the highest and holiest and encompass all of reality. Can such an idea be expressed with mere words??

Not.

So instead we thank Hashem that we didn't descend to the level of a goy. We are pleasant to goyim, we show them respect, we don't act condescendingly, but after all is said and done we are proud to be Jewish and not goyish.

In the words of the Master:

 ישראל עלה במחשבה תחילה". וראשית המחשבה היא כל היש במציאות העליונה הכוללת את הכלל כולו בהויתו היותר טהורה ויותר אצילית. והמדרגה הזאת, שאין מבלעדה במציאותה התהוות במהותיותה העצמית, היא עומדת למעלה מכל ברכה ותהילה, מכל הלל והודאה, ואי אפשר לבטא את הכרתה של טובה עליונה זו בשום רעיון ומחשבה, וק"ו בשום בטוי ומלול. אמנם מה שיש מקום להנחה דבורית הוא בדבר הירידה של המדרגות, מרום הגובה והטוהר עד לידי ההשפלה של משפחות האדמה, שלא פגעה ירידה זו בי ולא עשני גוי. ע"ז מלא פי תהילתך : בא"י, אמ"ה, שלא עשני גוי
