Leil Shabbos For Benji And Sara

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara were filmed eating at a non-kosher restaurant in London on Friday night, over Shabbat.

The Netanyahus were filmed sitting down to eat at the Gordon Ramsey’s River Restaurant in London's Savoy Hotel [on taxpayers money!!!], where they are staying during their diplomatic visit to Britain. A piece of lobster [!!!] can also be seen in the video [but he surely only ordered salad to make sure to keep kosher].

In response, Netanyahu said that it is "fake news" and in fact the video was doctored, super imposing them on a restaurant they had never ever entered. In fact, he claimed, he and Sarah'le were in Golders Green Friday night at the home of a Chasidishe Rebbe singing "י-ה אכסוף" and other "hartzige" niggunim.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid, known for his piety and careful devotion to every detail of Jewish law, criticized Netanyahu's choice of restaurant on Twitter. “There is no limit to Netanyahu’s hypocrisy: He eats in a non-kosher restaurant and then runs home to vote for the hametz law," he wrote. But Lapid is no hypocrite. He is a sincere G-d fearing Jew whose only concern in life is ריבוי כבוד שמים, which would explain why he was so incensed at Netanyahu's gastronomical choice for his "oneg shabbos".

Please excuse my ליצנותא דעבודה זרה. I use that tool in order to bring [in an admittedly sharp and biting way] ancient, traditional Jewish values into the conversation when so many religious people are enamored with Netanyahu and those like him.

On a more serious note: In a certain Yeshiva, they invite Netanyahu to their Yom Yerushalayim celebrations, singing and dancing in his honor as if he was a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah. This year, before he speaks, they should show the video and see how the bochrim feel about his presence in their Beis Medrash.

Netanyahu is a seasoned politician who wants to curry the favor of the religious in order to gain power. One could argue that he is the best person for the job, given the competition. Maybe. But at the end of the day, he is a person who lives a very non-Jewish lifestyle ["Jewish" defined as traditional according to Torah], who is the head of a Jewish State. The Rambam paskens [Melachim 1-7] that anybody who lacks Yiras Shomayim may not be appointed to ANY position of authority. Yes he is right wing, yes he is articulate, yes tries to form his coalitions to include religious parties, but he also tramples on the Torah on a daily basis. That is NOT what we have been davening for over the last 2000 years.
