אך השני הנה הוא קשה מאד, והוא השחוק והלצון, כי מי שטובע בם, הוא כמי שטובע בים הגדול, שקשה מאד להמלט ממנו, כי הנה השחוק הוא מאבד את לב האדם עד שכבר אין הטעם והדיעה מושלת בו, והרי הוא כשכור או שוטה אשר אי אפשר לתת להם ערמה או להנהיגם, כי אינם מקבלים הנהגה... כי אף שחמורה היא הערוה אצל כל בן דעת ולבו ירא מקרוב אליה, מכח הציור שכבר נצטייר בשכלו מאמיתת גודל פשעה ורוב ענשה, הנה השחוק וקלות ראש ממשיכים אותו מעט מעט מדריגה אחר מדריגה עד שיגיע אל העוון עצמו ויעשהו, וכל כך למה, לפי שכמו שכל מציאות הזהירות תלוי בשימת הלב על הדבר, כן כל עצמו של השחוק אינו אלא מסיר הלב מן המחשבות הישרות והעיוניות. ונמצא שלא יבואו הרהורי היראה בלבו כלל, ותראה קושי הלצון והשחתתו הרבה, כי כמו המגן המשוח בשמן, אשר ישמיט ויפיל מעליו החצים ומשליכם לארץ ולא יניח אותם שיגיעו אל גוף האדם, כן הלצון בפני התוכחה והמרדות, כי בליצנות אחת ובשחוק קטן יפיל האדם מעליו ריבוי גדול מן ההתעוררות וההתפעלות מה שהלב מתעורר ומתפעל בעצמו, מדי ראותו או שמעו ענינים שיעירוהו אל החשבון והפשפוש במעשים. ובכח הליצנות יפיל הכל לארץ ולא יעשו בו רושם כלל. ולא מפני חולשת הענינים ולא מפני חסרון הבנת הלב, אלא מפני כח הלצון ההורס כל עניני המוסר והיראה. והנה הנביא ישעיה היה צווח על זה ככרוכיא, כי היה רואה שזה היה מה שלא היה מניח מקום לתוכחותיו שיעשו רושם, והיה מאבד תקותם של החוטאים, והוא מה שאמר (ישעיה כ"ח) ועתה אל תתלוצצו פן יחזקו מוסריכם, וכבר גזרו אומר חז"ל שהלץ מביא היסורין עליו... כי מי שמתפעל מן התבוניות ומן הלימודים אינו צריך שיתיסר בגופו, כי כבר ישוב מחטאתיו בלי זה מכח הרהורי תשובה שיולדו בלבבו, על ידי מה שיקרא או שישמע מן המוסרים והתוכחות. אך הלצים שאינם מתפעלים מן התוכחות מפני כח ליצנותם, אין להם תיקון אלא השפטים, שאלה לא יהיה כח בליצנות לדחותם מעליהם כאשר ידחו המוסרים... Continuing a recent post: The toxicity of leitzanus is that it takes an important value and devalues it ['עי' פחד יצחק על פורים מאמר א]. It mocks Torah, Avodas Hashem etc. etc. Sadly, this is common on the Internet among the *frum* bloggers and x'ers and the like. In order to get a laugh, people who daven three times a day and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Jewish education for their children mock רוחניות in different ways [the most frequent target seems to be for some reason Mesivta Rabbeim. If we would only appreciate that the most important group of people for the continuation of the Jewish people is our Rabbeim and Morah's and we would treat and pay them accordingly - it would be a much greater world].
There is another type of leitzanus which is not at all funny: People who take absolute nonsense seriously. This includes sports, much of current events, movies etc. etc. Things that have zero to do with Avodas Hashem aren't taken with the height of seriousness. THAT is leitzanus. So much of the babble on Tucker Carlson [sans his Nazi-ific proclivities] and Ben Shapiro and all of the other pundits is leitzanus. Analyzing every shtus that comes out of Trump's mouth as if was a Rambam or a line in Tosfos. Or talking and talking and talking about an event that happened or speculating about what will be - even an important event - is leitzanus. Our time is נצחיות. Every minute is potentially another Mishna or Halacha or Chesed etc .etc. Wasting that on silliness is devaluing our greatest spiritual asset. The very first mitzva given to the Jewish people as a nation was the mitzva of sanctifying time - קידוש החודש. Nobody on line cares about the value of your time. They have one goal - to get your time for their shows [it is all just a *show* anyway]. This makes them richer and yet richer [in גשמיות] while it makes their viewers poorer and yet poorer [in רוחניות].
One CANNOT think it really matters which group of Goyim put a ball in a net more times and also believe in Torah Mi-Sinai. Completely incompatible. So that is leitzanus. One can enjoy the game but not take it seriously as the world does.
So the anti-leitzanus is to mock all of the nonsense. This accomplishes not only gaining the correct perspective but also allows one to laugh which is very healthy. That is what the Gemara [מגילה כה-ב] means when it says that all leitzanus is assur except for leitzanus of Avoda Zara. All false beliefs go under the rubric of Avoda Zara.
