Empathy is a wonderful quality.
The Jewish world has been horrified by the hostage situation since they were cruelly taken and have been tortured every day for the last 22 or so months. This empathy and care is wonderful and מי כעמך ישראל in our brotherhood and solidarity.
But bottom line - all of the talk does not help them in any concrete way. The only way we can really help is to daven and let the people in charge deal with the practical aspects of freeing them.
However - there are PLENTY of people who suffer greatly who we CAN help in a concrete physical way. They are all over the place. People who are drowning in debt, people who can't meet basic expenses, people who are lonely, need a listening ear, a smile. People who lie in pain alone in hospitals and would love visitors. People who could use a ride or a Shabbos meal. And the list goes on.
So instead of focusing solely on people we can't help [beyond tefilla and other spiritual means] why don't we focus our energy and resources on people who we CAN help? It is relatively easy to rage against the evil Hamas and lament the suffering of our brothers and sisters but harder to actively help people we can help.
