Let's face it. Most people are not towering intellectuals, philosophers, theologians, mystics etc. Most people like to have heat in the winter and AC in the summer, they like tasty, filling meals, they enjoy meaningful relationships, they want to have comfortable homes etc. etc. People are primarily living in the world of חומר - the physical. Therefore, it is understandable that their conceptions of Hashem and ruchniyus are often distorted. They aren't interested in the Mevakesh Lev series on the 13 Principals of Faith or shiurim in the philosophy of history based on Kisvei HaRav that I have merited giving. Videos on youtube, which appeal to the עולם הדמיון, are far more popular. [BTW - If this analysis is true, then Rav Chaim Ha-levi's chiddush that one loses Olam Haba even if he misunderstands one of the 13 principals, excludes most of Klal Yisrael from Olam Haba. We would rather not do so...]
But at the end of the day, people understand that Hashem is inscrutable. In Biblical terms "כי לא יראני האדם וחי". The problem is that many have strayed from the path because they felt that the understanding of the masses was in error. Sadly, their sophistication wasn't enough to bring them to a place where their knowledge would generate good deeds at least on the level or even greater than those of the average man. If a person is sophisticated he must use his powers of intellect to make him a better person!:-)
