Mark This Day!!!
Today, September 4th, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz won his seventh gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Spitz swam the fly leg of the 400-meter medley relay, and his team set a new world-record time of 3 minutes, 48.16 seconds. Remarkably, Spitz also established new world records in the six other events in which he won the gold. At the time, no other athlete had won so many gold medals at a single Olympiad. The record would stand until Michael Phelps took home eight gold medals at the Beijing Games in 2008.
Mark Spitz was born in Modesto, California, in 1950. He began receiving instruction in competitive swimming at age six, and by age 10 he held 17 national age-group records and one world age-group record. When he was 14, his family moved to Santa Clara so Spitz could train with George Haines of the celebrated Santa Clara Swim Club. At age 16, he won his first of 24 Amateur Athletic Union championships and at 17 took home five gold medals at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada.
Having set 10 world records by the time of the 1968 Summer Olympics, the 18-year-old Spitz brazenly predicted that he would take home six gold medals from the Mexico City Olympic Games. Actually, he won just two gold medals, both in team relay events, and took home a silver in the 100-meter butterfly and a bronze in the 100-meter freestyle. Humbled, he went to Indiana University in Bloomington to train under Doc Counsilman and prepare for the next Olympics. At Indiana, he won eight individual National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles and was named World Swimmer of the Year in 1969 and 1971. By the time he graduated in 1972, he was ready for the XX Olympiad in Munich, West Germany.
Spitz was expected to dominate at Munich, but the 22-year-old star had learned his lesson in Mexico City and made no predictions. His actions spoke loudly enough. On August 28, his spectacular victory march began with an easy victory in the 200-meter butterfly. The butterfly was his signature stroke, and he set a new world record of 2 min. 0.70 sec. That same night, he won his second gold as a member of the U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay. He swam the anchor leg, and his team finished in a world record 3 min. 36.42 sec. The next day, he won his third gold medal, with a world record time of 1 min. 52.78 sec. in the 200-meter freestyle.
He swam the 100-meter butterfly in 54.27 sec. to earn a world record and his fourth gold medal, and then anchored the 800-meter freestyle relay team to victory for another gold medal and world record. He considered pulling out of the 100-meter freestyle out of fears he would be bested by teammate Jerry Heidenreich but then went ahead with the race, finishing a half-stroke ahead of Heidenreich in a world record 51:22 sec. He had won his sixth gold medal, surpassing the medal record held by Italian fencer Nedo Nadi, who had won five gold medals at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.
The capstone of his gold medal sweep came on September 4, when his 400-meter medley relay team won the gold. After the victory, Spitz’s teammates lifted him on their shoulders and carried him around the pool in a victory lap.
Before Spitz’s great achievement could fully sink in, however, tragedy stuck at dawn on September 5 when Palestinian terrorists attacked the Israeli quarters in the Olympic village, killing an Israeli coach and wrestler and taking nine other Israeli team members hostage. Spitz, who is Jewish, was put under armed guard and then flown from Munich to London out of fear he might become a target. The nine Israeli hostages were eventually killed.
Spitz received a hero’s welcome in the United States and his good looks helped. He made a fortune from endorsements contracts, but a hoped-for movie career failed to pan out. He lost his amateur status and rarely swam in competition after 1972. In 1992, at age 42, he launched a comeback bid but failed to qualify for the Barcelona Olympics. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977 and was a member of the first class of inductees into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983.

There is mussar here. We join the Greek competitions. We win. We celebrate. 24 hours later - Jews taken hostage followed by slaughter. We really don't belong in such places in the first place. Where was this event? Munich, GERMANY!!!
Another mussar: The mussar sfarim say that in Elul even fish in the sea are shaking. We can add that even Jewish swimmers in the Olympics are shaking better than anyone else.

World Of Untruth
Years back I made a simcha [THANK YOU HASHEM FOR THAT!!!] and hired a talented musician 🎹🎺🎻🎷. It cost me about $300-$400. Today this same performer commands $30,000 [!!!!] for a simcha. It isn't that he got better. It is that back then he didn't have a "name" and today he does. [After I paid him, he sheepishly told me that we had agreed on 25 or so dollars more than I gave him which I promptly added].
So people are paying a few hundred dollars for the actual music and another $29,000 or so [adjust for inflation] for his name.
WOW!!😲😲
Should Yaakov Hate Esav ?
".... No less surprising is Moses’ insistence: “Do not despise an Edomite, because he is your brother.” Edom was, of course, the other name of Esau. There was a time when Esau hated Jacob and vowed to kill him. Besides which, before the twins were born, Rebecca received an oracle telling her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger.” (Gen. 25:23) Whatever these words mean, they seem to imply that there will be eternal conflict between the two brothers and their descendants.
At a much later age, during the Second Temple period, the Prophet Malachi said: “’Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?’ declares the Lord. ‘Yet I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated…” (Malachi 1:2-3). Centuries later still, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said, “It is a halachah that Esau hates Jacob.” Why then does Moses tell us not to despise Esau’s descendants?
The answer is simple. Esau may hate Jacob, but it does not follow that Jacob should hate Esau."
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
--------
It would seem odd that the Navi says in the name of Hashem that He hates Esav and yet we are told by Rabbi Sacks not to hate Esav.... "Maybe" Esav is evil and good hates evil. We hate Nazis. We hate Arab terrorists. We hate all those people who carried out Pogroms, inquisitions and who imprisoned Jews under the most horrific of conditions over the centuries.
But wait - what about the pasuk Note that it doesn't say to love Edom. It says not to be "מתעב" him. The Rambam in the Sefer Hamitzvos paskens this pasuk as one of the 613 mitzvos!!!

A Measuring Stick Of A Person
Regarding the previous post:
One of the prime indicators of the magnitude of a person is how much he talks about himself, his accomplishments, his needs, his hopes etc. etc. The MORE he speaks of himself, the smaller he is. The less he talks of himself, the bigger he is. [I know someone who gives a shiur. Somehow, every shiur is focused on the same topic. Him. He finds a way to weave everything he is talking about around himself].
This is a dead giveaway b/c people think that when they talk about themselves, they are impressing others. But a discerning observer understands that this self absorbed person is in all likelihood superficial and interested far more in his public image than in being a fundamentally solid human being. Part of personal greatness is making sure that people are UNAWARE of your accomplishments.
The Rav ztz"l has a line in one of his sfarim that haunts me: There is no end to the harm that a person does to himself when he thinks about himself too much. [It haunts me b/c he is essentially telling me that I am engaged in constant daily self harm. Shrrriiiiiiiiiinnkkkkkkk here I come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]. Of COURSE one must think about himself. But how much??? There is a limit and most of us go faaaar beyond the limit.
If one is self aware and mindful he will probably discover to his horror that close to one hundred percent of his thoughts are about himself. [Women think about themselves, too. I use the generic "him". In general however it would seem that the egos and self absorption of women are far smaller than that of men]. Even when he thinks of others, it is in the context of himself.
This can be overcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With self awareness, mindfulness and heavy duty MUSSAR.

Who Is In Power?
I recently saw an interview with a certain Israeli politician who used to be PM and would very much like to be again. The interview was split up into two parts. In the first part he spoke of how great his father was. The rest of the interview was devoted to his explaining how very awesome he is. I mean, who needs G-d when you have Bibi this politician. Or so is the impression he tried to give. He is brilliant, successful, ensures our safety, innovates ideas that promote incredible financial growth etc. etc. Not one mention was ever made of any mistake he made. After all, only mere mortals, human beings, make mistakes. Not all powerful politicians. He is a true fulfillment of the pasuk
