The Derech of Teshuva

B”H, 9 Teves, 5711

Greetings and blessings,
I received your letters from the first and second days of Chanukah in which you ask [for advice] in correcting and repenting for your guilt and sins.

The first stipulation in correcting [the matter] and repenting [for it] is complete regret over the past and a good resolution not to return to such foolishness [again]. From now on, for the sake of correction and repentance, you should establish fixed times to recite letters of the Torah, Tehillim, and the Zohar. As obvious, all of this should come in addition to the fixed times of study that every individual Jew must take upon himself, without obligating himself with a vow.

Similarly, you must endeavor to respond, with eagerness, Amen, Yehei Shmei Rabba..., Kedushah, and Barchu. And of primary importance: to influence Jewish children and draw them close to the love of G‑d, to the love of His Torah, and to the love of their fellow Jew, [imbuing them with the knowledge that] every one of them is like a child of G‑d, our L‑rd.

You will certainly inform me of what you did concerning the above.

Similarly, inform me if you are studying in the yeshivah.

With blessings for proper teshuvah and success in [your] studies,

Menachem Schneerson
