Some Jews are great Poskim, others Mekubalim, a rare few even have Ruach Hakodesh, others Talmudic geniuses, others philosophers, others poets, others pure Tzadikim, others great leaders, others great authors, others Roshei Yeshiva, others people of great deeds - Tzdaka, Chesed etc. etc. There are many different areas in which to excel. But if you see a great Mekubal - he might not be such a Posek. One might be a deep thinker but is not engaged in constant acts of Tzdaka and Chesed. He could be a great Baki who knows Shas by heart but is not original in his Torah. If you have a strong Kashya - he might not be the best place to go.
Today is the 90th Yahrtzeit of Rav Kook. He was ALL of those things. Simply unparalleled. Psak, Kabbala, Philosophy, Rosh Yeshiva, involved day and night helping people, and he knew EVERYTHING. He also had incredible supernatural spiritual visions that he documented. And all that while taking endless abuse from his small minded often hate filled opponents and personal tragedies.
He was irreplacable and I feel his loss deeply until this day. How the world needs him!!
If you have a sore throat - don't go to an opthamologist. People think all rabbis are rabbis and should be experts in everything Jewish. But there is just about nobody who is. That is not a criticism. We are all limited people.
But the Rav ztz"l was SOMETHING ELSE.
All we can do now is keep learning from him and use the principals he taught and try to apply them to our present reality.
When I hear Rabbonim saying certain things that make me very unsettled, I take comfort knowing that the Rav would not say those things and he was the מרא דשמעתתא and it is more more likely that his viewpoint represents true דבר השם.
