Hate Less - Understand More

Sadly, due to the draft issue, there has been a growing hatred in Israel between the Charedim and the non-Charedim. I totally understand the non-Charedim [as I understand the Charedim]. Their service would be shortened if the Charedim would enlist en masse and this war has taken a tremendous toll on families in so many different ways [deaths, injuries, prolonged absences from home, financial struggles, PTSD, and much much more]. So they are MADDDDD. This is evidenced by the taking a short on line tour of their not insignificant gripes.

But hating and being angry and resentful is not going to solve anything and just embitters people. [And frankly - It is not changing too many people's minds]. Someone once said that resentment is like eating poison and expecting the other person to die..

So something to think about [this argument only works of you believe in the G-d of Israel and the importance of Tradition]: There is no reason to be angry or [G-d forbid] hate Charedim b/c all they are doing is listening to their Rabbeim! And those Rabbeim are following THEIR Rabbeim. It all comes down to a small number of Rabbonim-Geonim-Tzadikim who set the tone in the Charedi world. From the Chazon Ish to Rav Kahanamen to the Steipler to Rav Schach to Douglas Murray etc. Really a small number of Rabbonim set the policy which now is impossible to change.

So I personally don't feel qualified to argue in Torah with people who are light years beyond me in every area of Torah and also in their Yiras Shomayim. But even if one DOES feel qualified to argue [as do many many many men, women and children of all ages and all stripes] - it is their "fault" and not that of their followers. Their followers drank listening to authority in their mothers milk. That is why the Charedi world is so ... Charedi. They follow their Rabbonim. So if the Mishna Brura says to do something - they do it. If the Mishna Brura says not to  - they don't. That is a good thing:-)! They have incredible respect and allegience to their teachers, parents and grandparents. Also a good thing!!:-) It is thanks to that they have been so wildly successful in building their communites from what only decades ago was almost non-existent to what it is today. A complete devotion to the Mesorah they were given with minimum "push back" [which is a GOOD THING!! "Pushing back" on preserving the Mesorah is a TERRIBLE thing!!:-)].

If they DO enlist that would constitute a rebellion against authority. Once that goes - then ANYTHING goes and Judaism is [חס ושלום!!] done.

There is a Charedi fellow [been in learning for decades etc.] who lives on my block [actually EVERYONE on my block is Charedi as is my whole neighborhood more or less] that has two sons who served in the army [and another one who would but he has psychological issues that don't allow him to do so]. Some would say - "GREAT". Charedim in the army. Yes, well - they are anything but Charedi. They threw off the yoke of their parents, teachers and מלכות שמים. Is that good??

So don't be mad at the followers who are just fulfilling the pasuk לא תסור מן הדבר אשר יגידו לך ימין ושמאל and don't be mad at those who paskened that Yeshiva bochrim should remain in Yeshiva even at a time of war b/c they are good [actually GREAT AND HOLY] people who meant well and ruled based on their understanding of רצון השם!:-)!!:-) Yes - people are one million percent convinced that they were dead wrong but even if they were [and again - I would never say such a thing because I am an עם הארץ with a Doctorate in Ignorance and an honorary degree from the University of Stupid] - they are only human and certainly meant no malice. Nor do the contemporary spiritual leaders of their communities.
