The Ills of Modern Culture and Their Impact on the Human Psyche

In the following remarks, we seek to examine and reflect upon the considerable harm wrought by technology across its various instruments. Our purpose here is not to discuss the various religious prohibitions, nor the moral failures and personal shortcomings resulting from the use of these devices—the hazards commonly known as the "dangers of technology." Rather, the core of our discussion focuses on the nature of the culture that has developed worldwide in the wake of these devices, and the profound impression it leaves upon the human personality—even when the devices themselves are filtered and thoroughly clean.

A few years ago, I happened to travel alongside a man who served as the chief stage producer in the theater department of a well-known university in Israel. Out of interest, I asked him why he chose to work specifically in theater rather than in movie production, which is far more prevalent. I wanted to understand what drew him so strongly to a live performance facing an audience.

His answer was thought-provoking and deeply insightful. He recounted: "As a young man, I studied at a Hesder yeshiva. Over the years, I regularly listened to talks given by the yeshiva's mashgiach (spiritual mentor), while simultaneously listening to recordings of lectures by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, of blessed memory, from Boston. In terms of spiritual depth, content level, and quality, there was certainly no comparison—Rabbi Soloveitchik's talks far surpassed those of the mashgiach. Yet astonishingly, as time went on, I realized that it was precisely from the mashgiach at the yeshiva that I derived the primary benefit and personal growth.

"The explanation for this, in my view," he added, "lies in the fact that I experienced the mashgiach in a tangible, living manner—face to face—rather than through recorded tape. From this, I concluded that a direct, unmediated connection is fundamentally different from one conveyed through secondary media. For this reason, I decided to dedicate my work to theater rather than cinema; theater is built upon a direct, unmediated engagement with the audience, whereas films undergo numerous edits that alter the reality of things, and even the connection with the viewers occurs artificially through a device."

He further offered another rationale for his choice: "I happened to read an article in a popular newspaper that divided human history into three major epochs:

In the early generations, the world was primarily anchored in values of 'between man and God'—people believed in a Higher Power, served their Creator, and all of life maintained a deep orientation upward.

Later in history, an era characterized by values of 'between man and his fellow' spread—the spiritual orientation toward Heaven dimmed, and people began to focus their lives on interpersonal relationships, such that man's primary existence was defined by his relation to his relatives and peers.

In our time, the concepts of 'between man and God' and even 'between man and his fellow' have waned, and contemporary reality is defined as a culture of 'between man and machine'. That is, even the fundamental, healthy connection with others no longer exists in its natural state; man operates facing devices and machines, and his primary connection to others is mediated through them. For this reason," he concluded, "I chose the world of theater, which embodies a direct and unmediated relationship with the audience—out of a desire to live in a world that fosters relationships 'between man and his fellow.'"

The Erosion of Interpersonal Connections and Harm to Self-Development

These concepts are fundamental and capture the essence of modern culture. In former generations, the cultivation of interpersonal relationships was grounded in the practice of 'between man and his fellow'—a vital, foundational pillar in building a person's character, which ought to develop properly within a social framework through unmediated dialogue between individuals. Similarly, commentators on Ethics of the Fathers explained the Sages' instruction to "acquire for yourself a friend"—beyond the great virtue of a friend who helps one ascend in spiritual service, man inherently requires good friendship and companionship for his very being.

However, the shaping of social connections in the modern world occurs primarily through devices and communication groups. Consequently, the resulting bond lacks depth and authenticity, leaving emotional development shallow and unhealthy. The nature of communication today has utterly transformed the proper structure of social life. We live in a generation of 'between man and machine', in which man functions primarily opposite devices.

To illustrate the gravity of this issue: in a certain community, a high number of divorces occurred within a short span of time during the very first year of marriage—figures that were unusual by any standard. Upon looking into the matter, it became clear that the couples had not spent much time meeting face to face prior to marriage; instead, they communicated by text messages. It was through this medium that the foundations of their relationship were formed. As a result, the connection between them was not genuine, but rather external and superficial, failing to touch the depths of the soul. Text messages represent a shallow connection through which a person cannot express their true self or establish a meaningful bond.

In today's general society, social life is formed primarily through instant messaging groups, presenting a major obstacle. The proper path to building a true connection with a friend requires openness, candid dialogue, shared experiences, and revealing the inner heart. Such a bond cannot grow within mass group chats, where communication is mechanical and artificial.

Furthermore, in these groups, a person becomes accustomed to broadcasting whatever happens to them instantly to the public, leaving no reserved interior space. Everything is exposed and open. This is not personal sharing with a friend about private matters, as they no longer have private matters; they simply broadcast everything publicly while continuously absorbing superficial information about others. An authentic personal connection cannot grow from such communication.

Any reasonable person understands that building a true friendship with a peer is not done by sharing every aspect of one's life with broad groups, but through cultivating direct, deep relationships with specific individuals.

The Loss of Introspection and the Ability to Change

These media tools have accustomed people to a constant need for connection to their environment at all times. Disconnecting even for a short period evokes a feeling as though their very inner existence has been taken away. Today, it is rare to find individuals capable of sitting in solitude for an extended period, simply reflecting quietly with themselves. Every event demands immediate sharing and continuous online presence. This reality points to a weakness of mind and an inability to live with an independent inner world.

Moreover, contemporary communication is exceptionally shallow. It is a cheap form of discourse built upon gossip, frivolity, and elevating trivial matters into primary concerns. When even friendships are mediated through these devices, a person's standing is degraded, eroding their spiritual and human value.

The definition of 'between man and machine' has become a deep-seated culture. Man lives inside his devices, and alongside the superficial connections he maintains with his surroundings, his capacity for personal self-development has been severely damaged.

Independent thought and individual uniqueness have changed beyond recognition. When a person is given the opportunity to spend time with themselves, they cultivate their personality and deepen their thought. But while submerged in a world of constant communication, bombarded by notifications, and rushing to publicize every action without preserving privacy, their personality remains impoverished and surface-level.

As evidence of this: during my travels abroad, looking at airplane passengers, I am repeatedly astonished. During a long flight, there are many hours that could be utilized for noble purposes and deep thought. Instead, passengers of all ages sit through the entire flight absorbed in mindless computer games at a level suitable for young children. This represents a painful decline in thought and spirit. And the moment the plane touches down, everyone urgently pulls out their phones—an absolute addiction!

All of this bears witness to the nature of culture today: people are no longer capable of being alone with their thoughts. Thus grows a generation devoid of intellectual depth and lacking a structured personality—this is the culture of 'between man and machine.'

The Difficulty of Internal Change and the Loss of Privacy

As technology continues to advance, individuals face increasingly greater difficulty in building their inner world and undergoing personal transformation. This is particularly evident among those who work with newly observant individuals (ba'alei teshuva): in the past, it was easier to influence them because they arrived to study while disconnecting from their previous environment, taking root in their new place within a short time. Today, the connection to their former culture and the general atmosphere of the street is maintained through devices; thus, internal change requires far greater effort.

A similar challenge exists in the yeshiva world: it has become much harder to influence students and elevate them. When a student enters the doors of a yeshiva, he is meant to immerse himself in the world of Torah and transform completely through separation from the outside world. However, when he remains continuously connected to external events and breathes that outside atmosphere, his capacity for change weakens, impairing his ability to absorb the spirit of the yeshiva properly.

Another area severely impacted by this culture is the concept of privacy. A person's private life constitutes a foundational element in building their personality, independence, and individuality. The world of modern media tramples this concept, intruding into the private domain and exposing secrets under the guise of "the public's right to know."

Consequently, people have lost their sense of privacy, exposing their own inner lives to anyone interested. The driving concept behind communication today is that every action requires immediate sharing. Things have reached a point where modesty and privacy have been thoroughly undone. In certain communities abroad, a practice has even spread to film and publicly broadcast intimate, personal events—such as a couple's engagement—under the assumption that everything must become public domain.

A person's private life is meant to be preserved and shared only with those closest to them, not abandoned to the public sphere.

Conclusion

Younger generations born into this reality do not fully grasp how far it departs from a healthy human structure. The world today is fundamentally different, and human development—both in personal character building and in relationships with others—has been severely harmed.

In a generation of 'between man and machine', if we desire to grow and develop properly—especially regarding a life of value, elevation, and holiness—we must recognize the harm of this culture and its detrimental effect on our character, striving not to be influenced by it. Only in this way can we build ourselves properly for a life of truth and integrity.
