Me’aras HaMachpeilah and the Patriarchs: The Culmination of Tzuras Ha’Adam and the Synthesis of Heaven and Earth
The Tenth Nisayon According to Rabbeinu Yonah: The Elevation Beyond the Akeidah
The Mishnah in Pirkei Avos teaches:
“Avraham Avinu, alav hashalom, was tested with ten nisyonos (trials) and stood firm in all of them, to make known the magnitude of the love of Avraham Avinu.”
While the majority of the Rishonim view the Akeidah as the ultimate and final nisayon, Rabbeinu Yonah presents a unique approach. Although he readily acknowledges that the Akeidah was the greatest of all the trials—demanding that Avraham offer up his beloved son as an olah—he nonetheless maintains that a tenth trial remained thereafter. In his commentary on Avos, Rabbeinu Yonah writes:
“The tenth is the burial of Sarah. As it was said to him: ‘Arise, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for unto thee will I give it.’ Yet when his wife passed away, he could not find a place to bury her until he purchased it, and nevertheless he did not question the ways of HaKadosh Baruch Hu. To make known the magnitude of his love, He tested him, to reveal to all creatures that he was God-fearing and whole in all his middos.”
At first glance, this is deeply perplexing. Is there truly any room left to question the utter fidelity of Avraham Avinu that required yet another trial after the Akeidah?
Moreover, wherein lies the true test here? It was entirely self-evident that Eretz Yisrael had not been handed over to Avraham immediately; the land was densely populated by indigenous inhabitants, each residing upon and exercising ownership over his respective parcel. Avraham possessed only a divine promise—as explicitly articulated in the Bris Bein HaBesarim: “And the fourth generation shall return here.” Could it possibly have entered Avraham’s mind that the promise of “for unto you will I give it” was to materialize at that very instant, rendering him the immediate master of all property throughout the land?
How could it be that this alone constitutes the tenth trial—ensuring that he harbored no hirhur (grievance) against the divine conduct for failing to receive the land immediately? Above all: after he stood immovable in the trial of the Akeidah—a command that seemingly shattered the entire future promise of “for in Yitzchak shall thy seed be called”—what vital dimension of spiritual refinement could still have been lacking?
The Inner Essense of Me’aras HaMachpeilah
This exceptional parsha warrants profound contemplation. The Torah expounds at great length upon every nuance of the acquisition and the deliberations surrounding it. While these matters remain sublime and concealed, they bear directly upon the core of this inquiry.
Chazal teach (Bereishis Rabbah 58):
“Whoever is buried in Me’aras HaMachpeilah receives a reward that is twofold and doubled (kaful u-mechupal) from Heaven.”
We must decipher the deeper meaning of this “kaful u-mechupal.”
Let us first examine the very term Machpeilah—the concept of kefel (duplicity or doubling). In truth, a genuine kefel does not denote two distinct, foreign entities set side-by-side. Rather, it signifies one single reality realized twice.
We find this elucidated in the halachic concept of tenai kaful (a doubled condition): when a person articulates the positive condition (hein), stating: “If such occurs, I shall act accordingly,” his words inherently embody the converse—namely, that if it does not occur, he will not act. The entire Talmudic debate regarding whether “from the affirmative you infer the negative” (miklal hein ata shomei’a lav) concerns only whether the negative condition must be articulated explicitly; all agree that conceptually, both facets are inextricably bound. It is termed a tenai kaful because one is stating the selfsame truth twice. So too regarding the Choshen Mishpat: “Square it shall be, doubled” (kavul) does not mean joining an external fabric, but rather folding the single cloth upon itself into two layers. This is the precise definition of kefel.
The Synthesis of Heaven and Earth: The Mandate of the First Pasuk
The Torah opens with the foundational verse:
“Bereishis bara Elokim es hashamayim ve’es ha’aretz” — “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
In this verse lie three essential revelations:
The Creator brought forth the heavens.
He brought forth the earth.
He brought forth their nexus, their synthesis, and their coexistence as a unified, coordinated reality.
Chazal reveal that heaven and earth are entirely parallel; there is nothing on earth that lacks a corresponding counterpart in heaven, and nothing in heaven without its counterpart on earth. Heaven and earth were designed to exist as a single, indivisible organism.
The Torah was not given to us as mere historical narrative, but as Torah—etymologically rooted in hora’ah (practical, binding instruction). It is an imperative directing man to actualize its words in concrete reality. What, then, is the practical imperative embedded within the very first verse?
The command is this: Man must ensure that heaven and earth remain parallel and unified just as the Creator fashioned them. We must never allow the earthly realm to deviate from its heavenly counterpart. The moment one severs the terrestrial from the celestial, he transgresses the very first verse of the Torah. Our primary avodah is to preserve that original primordial cohesion.
The Creation of Man: An Emissary of Peace Between Upper and Lower Spheres
The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 12) expounds:
“All that you behold are the generations of heaven and earth... On the second day He created from the celestial beings, as it is said: ‘Let there be a firmament.’ On the third day He created from the terrestrial beings: ‘Let the earth bring forth grass.’ On the fourth day He created from the celestial beings: ‘Let there be lights.’ On the fifth day He created from the terrestrial beings: ‘Let the waters bring forth.’ On the sixth day, when He came to create Man, He said: ‘If I create him from the celestial beings, the upper realms will outnumber the lower by one creation, and there will be no peace (shalom) in the world. If I create him from the terrestrial beings, the lower realms will outnumber the upper, and there will be no peace. Behold, I shall create him from both the celestial and the terrestrial for the sake of peace.’ Thus it is written: ‘And Hashem Elokim formed man—dust from the earth (from the lower realms), and He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (from the upper realms).’”
Man is a unique creation bearing within his very constitution both heaven and earth. The Master of the Universe breathed into him a divine neshamah of His own essence, embedding it within a vessel formed of the earthly soil.
Consequently, man’s cardinal mission is the realization of the Torah’s opening verse. All subsequent mitzvos are branches emanating from this primary root. Through our very tzuras ha’adam (the authentic form of man), we are charged to bind the dual realms into one.
One of the great luminaries of earlier generations expounded upon the verse: “The heavens are the heavens of Hashem, but the earth He hath given to the children of men” (Hashamayim shamayim l’Hashem, ve’ha’aretz nasan livnei adam). Why does the text duplicate the word shamayim? He explained: The heavens are inherently shamayim l’Hashem; they require no elevation. The earth, however, was given over to mankind precisely so that they might transform the earth itself into shamayim l’Hashem.
Machpeilah: Actualizing the Ideal into Reality
At the deepest level, the true machpeilah of existence is the duality of heaven and earth—the same divine reality manifested in two distinct dimensions.
In Me’aras HaMachpeilah, we encounter the domain of mankind. The cave was set apart for four couples: Adam and Chavah—the literal handiwork of the Almighty—and the Avos and Imahos. These giants lived their lives in Olam HaZeh in a manner that flowed seamlessly into Olam HaBa. Their existence was an authentic hachpalah (doubling), for they executed the exact same reality twice: that which they lived here below was identical to that which they continue to embody in the celestial realms above.
In the architecture of the human soul, kefel represents the transition from potential (ko’ach) to actualization (po’al). When a man resolves an intention in his heart, the matter exists in potential. When he executes it in reality, the concept is doubled—it is brought forth into a second state of being.
This dual manifestation is reflected in the holy tongue through two faculties:
The physical act of the hands: derived from the root kaf (palm), giving rise to the word kefel.
The speech of the mouth: giving rise to the idiom “pi shenayim” (a double portion). While the mouth is a singular organ—unlike the paired eyes, ears, and nostrils—it represents doubling because speech externalizes and duplicates the internal thought of the heart. Authentic speech is designed to serve as a machpeilah, giving concrete outer form to the hidden inner world.
The Patriarchs: Perfecting the Primordial Form of Man
This was the singular strength of the Avos: they translated the divine intent of Creation from potential into concrete actuality. They brought the earth into total alignment with heaven, thereby fulfilling the mandate of “Bereishis bara Elokim.”
(The Zohar Hakadosh notes that Me’aras HaMachpeilah corresponds to the letter Hei—the letter that appears twice within the Shem Havayah. The essence of the letter Hei is the practical manifestation and bestowal of the divine will, as seen in Yosef’s declaration: “Heh lachem zera”—“Behold, here is seed for you.”)
The primordial archetype of tzuras ha’adam was manifested through these four couples:
Adam and Chavah were the original prototype, formed directly by the hands of the Creator (“for all else was created by divine utterance, whereas he was created with hands”—Rashi, Bereishis 1:27). Though the sin compromised that pristine form, Adam’s 130 years of teshuvah culminated in the birth of Sheis, through whom the foundations of the world were re-established. Adam and Chavah belong to the Machpeilah as the original root through which the divine image was brought into physical reality.
The Avos and Imahos—the pillars of the world—redeemed and perfected this tzuras ha’adam. They brought the presence of the Creator into the fabric of the physical universe, ensuring that “sof ma’aseh” (the final deed) aligned completely with “machashavah techilah” (the primordial thought).
The entire cosmos was destined to be a machpeilah—an absolute mirroring wherein everything executed in deed reflects precisely the divine blueprint. Wherever a divergence exists between the inner will and the outer reality, the world suffers corruption.
The sanctified souls resting in Me’aras HaMachpeilah achieved this total synthesis. In their lives and in their deaths, their external existence was an exact, uncompromised duplicate of the divine will. They revealed that, in their ultimate essence, heaven and earth are not two disparate worlds, but one unified divine revelation.
