Explaining The Din

One well known Rav from Bnei Brak explained that the reason that more Charedim died from the virus than other Jews is because the irreligious Jews are תינוקות שנשבו [according to the Chazon Ish] so they are guiltless while the religious Jews sin and know better so the middas hadin got them.

Since I am a Torah Jew and the Torah ENCOURAGES questions, I will, after asking mechilah, ask.

This explanation is making an assumption - that non-frum jews are תינוקות שנשבו. This is a questionable assumption that was not accepted by many poskim. A תינוק שנשבה is one who was taken into captivity by Gentiles as a baby and knows no better. In today's world where everybody is one click away from finding out EVERYTHING they need to know about being Jewish, it is hard to apply to them this Talmudic category. Explaining all of these tragic deaths based on the shittah of one אחרון [as great as he was] is a hard pill to swallow.

Another assumption it makes is that תינוקות שנשבו are better on some level than frum Jews. A Jew who eats חזיר on יום כיפור שחל להיות בשבת is better than all of the Tzadikim who were niftar??

On the other hand, Chazal DO SAY that הקב"ה מדקדק עם סביביו כחוט השערה so not that they are worse but דין is more exacting for them even though they are much better Jews than the תינוקות שנשבו or even if you don't assume they are תינוקות שנשבו.

I feel like this Rov [and many others] feel obligated to be Hashem's defense lawyer so they argue in His favor proving that He is correct. Another very well known Rov said that it is a KIDDUSH HASHEM [!!!!] that so many frum people died because of the pasuk בקרובי אקדש. That pasuk means that since Nadav and Avihu sinned and immediate punishment was exacted, there was a Kiddush Hashem. In our case there was no visible sin and we generally don't see the passing of every Tzadik as a Kiddush Hashem. If anything, it is the opposite [which is precisely why these Rabbonim find it necessary to defend Hashem].

If one gives weak answers to explain Hashem it doesn't strengthen people's faith but often the opposite. The explanation that strengthens my personal faith is written here
