Leadership In Our Community

A thought about this article:

In our community some of the Rabbonim have shown GREAT leadership skills. Others, at times, unfortunately, it seems, have been lacking in effective leadership. [Not that it is my place to judge but I often find myself judging even though it is not my place:-).

Part of it I believe is "mindfulness". Some people are mindful and aware of the fact that they are leaders and people are looking to them for leadership. Others maybe less so. They see themselves perhaps as Torah scholars/teachers and that being their self definition the question that plagues [excuse the term] them is "am I learning enough?" and not "am I an adequate leader?" or "what do the people need from me now?". I am not sure about this but suggesting a possibility.

There is a vort I believe of the Chiddushei Ha-Rim: In Parshas Pinchas, Moshe appoints Yehoshua to succeed him - at Hashem's behest. What about Pinchas?? After his heroic act of קנאות - zealousness, HE should be the man!! He proved that is can take responsibility when necessary!! THAT is leadership.

He answered: קנאות is GREAT when necessary but a קנאי can't be a leader. To be a leader you need tolerance, as the pasuk says "איש אשר רוח בו" a man who knows to go with the spirit of each individual [as Rashi explains]. A קנאי does not a leader make. Hence the choice of Yehoshua.

I say the same about leadership. There is a certain skill set required for effective leadership and not everyone has it or is interested in the task.

This is not to be taken as a personal missive against anyone in particular. Again - it is my not place to be judging. I am a nobody or less. Hashem is the Melech Ha-Mishpat.

Just a general observation with great practical significance.
