עיקר התשובה היא להמשיך חיות מחדש שעי"ז יכול לתקן כל הקלקולים שנעשה בריה חדשה, ולכן צריך להיות מקודם בטל לגמרי כדמיון תהו ובהו וחשך ואח"כ ויאמר אלקים יהי אור, כן בעל תשובה צריך לידע שאין לו מציאות וקיום רק מה שהשם יתברך יתן לו, ואותיות תהו ובהו אותיות תשובה וש' מרומז על החשך, ואח"כ נפתח לו השער הפונה קדים שנאמר עליו יהיה

The primary act of teshuva involves drawing on to oneself new life and vitality through which one can fix every sin, therefore one first must nullify oneself completely as it says in the Torah, first there is תהו ובהו - empty desolate chaos and afterwards there was light. So a Baal Teshuva must know that he has no existence and reality and has only what Hashem gives him. The letters of תהו ובהו are all in the word תשובה and the ש alludes to חשך - darkness. Afterwards the internal eastern gate [in the Beis Hamikdash] which is normally closed, opens up [as it says in Yechezkel] on Shabbos. That is why we say that people are דופקי בתשובה - knocking on the door of Teshuva, because the door is closed. But on Shabbos Kodesh it opens up and that is why on Shabbos it is easy to do Teshuva because the internal eastern gate is opened [symbolizing that one can enter into Hashem's inner sanctum and enjoy His closeness].
