Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook related that someone once came to ask a question of Ha-Gaon Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer ztz"l. He thought for a bit and then answered. This person went to Rav Kok and asked the same question and the Rav answered immediately. He went back to Rav Isser Zalman and asked him how come Rav Kook was able to answer in a heartbeat while Rav Isser Zalman had to think first.
Rav Isser Zalman answered that all of the gedolim are only tops until they get to the door of Rav Kook. Once they go in to the room of Rav Kook, he dwarfs them.
