Here is a translated and structured summary of the lesson:

Summary of the Lesson: Kitniyot (Legumes) on Passover

Introduction

The prohibition of eating kitniyot (legumes) on Passover is a custom/decree established after the completion of the Talmud. While it has become universally accepted among Ashkenazic communities over the last several centuries, the specifics of its laws and definitions have been extensively discussed by later authorities (Poskim).

I. The Source and Reasons for the Prohibition

Talmudic Source: The Gemara (Pesachim 35a) states that only the five species of grain can become Chametz (leavened). Rice and millet do not leaven. Consequently, the Rambam, Rosh, and Shulchan Aruch rule that legumes are permitted on Passover.

The Ashkenazic Custom: Leading Ashkenazic Rishonim (such as the Smak and Maharil) cited a long-standing custom to forbid kitniyot. The Rama codified this, stating: "The custom in Ashkenaz is to be stringent, and one should not change it."

Three Reasons for the Prohibition:

Resemblance to Grain: Legumes are often ground into flour or baked into bread. Unlearned people might confuse legume flour/bread with grain flour/bread and mistakenly permit actual Chametz.

Cross-Contamination: Grains are often grown in the same fields or stored in the same sacks as legumes; therefore, actual grain may be mixed into the legumes.

Appearance: Certain types of wheat can sometimes look like legumes.

II. The Legal Status: Decree, Custom, or Vow?

Some authorities (Maharil, Chatam Sofer) treat it as a formal decree (Gezeira) established by early Ashkenazic sages for their region.

Others (Chayei Adam, Igrot Moshe) view it as a binding custom (Minhag).

Legal Practicality: Because it is not a biblical prohibition, doubts regarding kitniyot are generally treated leniently (Sfeika d'Rabanan l'Kula).

III. Leniencies and Special Cases for Ashkenazim

Annulment: An Ashkenazi cannot simply perform Hatarat Nedarim (annulment of vows) to stop observing this custom, as it was accepted by the entire community.

Distress and Illness: In times of famine or extreme need, the prohibition may be relaxed. It is permitted for the sick (even those not in mortal danger) and for children to consume kitniyot if necessary.

Precautions: When permitted for the sick/children, one must check the legumes carefully for stray grains and should ideally use separate utensils.

IV. Sephardic Customs and Interactions

Sephardic Practice: Most Sephardim follow the Shulchan Aruch and eat kitniyot. However, some communities (e.g., in Baghdad or certain families in Jerusalem) traditionally avoided rice.

Intermarriage: Rules vary for an Ashkenazic woman who marries a Sephardic man (she may follow his lenient custom) or vice versa.

Hosting: An Ashkenazi guest in a Sephardic home may not eat kitniyot, but they may eat from the Sephardic host’s utensils (even if kitniyot was cooked in them), provided no actual legumes are in the dish.

Converts: A convert from an Ashkenazic country who joins the community in Israel follows the "Master of the Land" (the Shulchan Aruch) and may be permitted to eat kitniyot.

V. Ownership, Benefit, and Mixtures

Ownership: One is permitted to keep kitniyot in their home during Passover; there is no obligation to sell them with the Chametz.

Benefit: One may derive benefit from kitniyot. For example, one may use oils derived from kitniyot for lighting or fuel.

Mixtures (Bittel): Unlike actual Chametz, which is not nullified even in a 1,000-fold mixture on Passover, kitniyot that accidentally falls into a dish is nullified by a simple majority (some require a 60-fold ratio).

VI. Defining What Qualifies as "Kitniyot"

Potatoes: Not considered kitniyot because they were not known in Europe when the custom was established (the Igrot Moshe uses this logic for other new foods).

Peanuts/Pistachios: There are differing customs; many permit them as they are "nuts" and not "legumes."

Coffee, Tea, Cocoa: Generally permitted.

Cottonseed Oil/Quinoa: These are modern debates. Quinoa is often permitted because it does not grow near grain and was not part of the original custom.

Erev Pesach: The custom in many communities is to stop eating kitniyot from the time Chametz becomes forbidden on the morning of the 14th of Nisan.

Faith is a Power in the Soul

In these meetings, we wish to explain the foundations of faith and the mutual relationship between faith and character traits (Middot). First, we must know that faith is not merely a matter of intellect and outlook, but is one of man’s internal powers and one of his character traits, and there is a mutual influence between them. All human traits reside in the heart, and therefore one trait influences another. Since faith is also included among the traits, there is a mutual influence between traits and faith. Now we must clarify which traits aid faith and which traits hinder it, and how strengthening faith assists in refining character. Before we address this, it is appropriate to explain what this power of faith rooted in man actually is.

Faith is a power that surrounds man in many situations: the buyer trusts the seller, the son trusts his parents, the patient trusts the doctor, and so too in all existing relationships between people.

Even a person raised in an environment far removed from faith in God is a believer, but his faith is directed toward other things. I have never found a person completely detached from faith, except for one individual who was mentally ill and disconnected from communication with people. This disconnect also hindered his faithful connection with his Creator. Likewise, there are people whose faith is directed toward believing in their leaders. A Communist once told me that I am a blind believer. I said to him, "We are both believers; I believe in something logical—that the Holy One, Blessed be He, created all the worlds—whereas you believe in Stalin, that he saved the world!" That Communist’s power of faith operated in him with full intensity, but he did not invest it in the correct direction.

It should be added that creation itself hides the faith in the Creator of the world, as brought down in the books of the Early Authorities (Rishonim), that the word Olam (world) is from the language of He'elem (concealment). That is, the world does not reveal the Creator without us delving deeply and contemplating it, and as long as He is not revealed, the power of faith is drawn in other directions.

Basic faith exists in every person's heart, and therefore even Gentiles can believe in God, but their faith is not like ours.

In the Torah, we find a demand upon Gentiles regarding a lack of fear (Yirah), as heard from the words of Abraham our Forefather: "There is only no fear of God in this place" (Genesis 20:11). Similarly, regarding Amalek, the Torah says (Deuteronomy 25:18): "And he did not fear God." On the other hand, we do not find in the Torah that they are held accountable for a lack of faith.

However, regarding the Jewish people as a whole, Moses our Teacher argued and said: "But they will not believe me" (Exodus 4:1), which was a subtle demand regarding faith. Conversely, the Holy One, Blessed be He, answered him: On the contrary, the Children of Israel are "believers, children of believers." "They are believers—as it is written, 'And the people believed'; children of believers—as it is written, 'And he [Abraham] believed in God'" (Shabbat 97a).

The faith of a Jew is extremely strong, and the reason for this is that the Jewish soul is saturated with faith from Abraham our Forefather, who was the head of believers and planted the power of faith in his descendants.

The believer finds many proofs to strengthen his faith; indeed, with a true look at creation, it is all a powerful proof for faith, but faith itself is a "feeling"—a power within man. Faith does not depend on proofs, but when the feeling of faith is directed toward faith in God, many reinforcements for his faith are revealed to him. The goal of bringing proofs to one who does not believe is only to awaken within him the power of faith that is already planted in him. Similarly for us, every additional proof strengthens the faith hidden within us.

When a person knows that there is a power of faith ingrained and operating in him constantly, this knowledge itself helps him, for he understands that his role is to direct that power toward faith in the Creator of the world.

Torah scholars and students of Mussar (ethics) are not satisfied with a lesser faith; rather, they always seek to strengthen their faith until the faith carries them through all the different situations in their lives.

When we relate to faith as a form of ethical work, we notice that every single trait influences it. The reason for this is that faith is a delicate power in man; therefore, it can be easily damaged by a flaw or deficiency in character traits.

If we succeed in clarifying which traits weaken faith and which strengthen it, the path of how to work on strengthening our faith will be laid out before us.

Our Sages say (Shabbat 31a) that when a person is judged after his passing, the first question they ask him is: "Did you deal faithfully (Be-Emunah) in business?" Why do they ask if he was meticulous about honesty in his trade, and not ask a simple question: "Did you believe in God?" The explanation is that the way to build faith in a clear and practical manner is through his conduct in business—if it is done with clean hands. When he conducts his business properly, it is clear that his faith in the Holy One, Blessed be He, is strong.

See Sefer HaKuzari (Article 4, Section 3) that we do not know God's existence through proofs from His actions alone, "but... through prophetic hint and spiritual vision, for proofs mislead [their danger is present - Kol Yehuda] and from proofs a person may come to heresy and destructive views."

When the Holy One, Blessed be He, gave the news to Abraham our Forefather regarding the continuation of his offspring, it was said of him (Genesis 15:6): "And he believed in God, and He accounted it to him as righteousness." Rashi explains: "'And he believed in God'—he did not ask Him for a sign regarding this. 'And He accounted it to him as righteousness'—the Holy One, Blessed be He, considered it a merit and righteousness for Abraham for the faith that he believed in Him." Ramban questions this explanation: "I do not understand what this merit is; why would he not believe in the 'God of Truth',  especially as he was a prophet himself and 'not a man that He should lie'? And one who believed [enough] to slaughter his only, beloved son and [stood through] other trials, how could he not believe in good news?!"

The Maharal (Gevurot Hashem Chapter 7) remarks on Ramban’s wonder: Why is it not appropriate to consider it a merit for Abraham that he believed in God? Is faith a small thing? Even regarding Moses our Teacher, who was the master of all prophets and perfectly complete, we find a demand regarding a lack of faith, as stated (Numbers 20:12): "Because you did not believe in Me"? Thus we see that perfect faith is a great thing.

Abraham our Forefather's faith was at an exalted level, for our Sages said (Yevamot 64b): "Rav Nachman said in the name of Rabbah bar Avuha: Our mother Sarah was physically incapable of bearing children (Aylonit), as it is said, 'And Sarai was barren, she had no child'—she did not even have a womb." Since by the laws of nature she could not give birth, and nonetheless he believed that she would give birth, his faith was certainly in a state of perfection—therefore, the Torah praised the greatness of his faith.

11 Nissan 1954

To our brothers, the Children of Israel, and the activists of education,

Specifically in every place [where they may be],

May G-d grant them life.

Peace and Blessing!

Passover begins with "When your son shall ask you"—that your son will ask you—and "You shall tell your son"—that you shall tell your son. And there are various ways of asking and answering, according to the four types of "sons": the Wise, the Wicked, the Simple, and the one who does not know how to ask.

Despite the differences between these four sons—even their total opposition to one another—they all have a common denominator: even the Wicked son is present at the Seder service. He is there, living together and taking an interest in those performing the service, in the life of Torah and Mitzvot.

This gives hope—and a very strong hope—that not only the Simple son and the one who does not know how to ask, but even the Wicked son, will become Wise sons, fully conscious Jews who observe Torah and Mitzvot.

Regrettably, however, there exists—especially in our time of "double and redoubled darkness"—another type of son: the child who is not at the Seder at all. He asks no questions, because he has nothing to do with Torah and Mitzvot, with true Jewish laws and customs. He does not even know that there is such a thing as "this service"—a Passover Seder, an Exodus from Egypt, and the Receiving of the Torah.

With these children, one must occupy oneself long before Passover and before the Seder night. For them, too, one must devote oneself with self-sacrifice (mesiras nefesh) and love for one’s fellow Jew (ahavas Yisrael).

For not a single Jewish child may be forgotten, and every effort must be made to pull him out of his situation and bring him back to the Jewish Seder table.

As with all painful phenomena, in order to rectify the situation, one must first know the causes that brought it about; so it is in this case.

To our regret, we must recognize that in almost every instance, the blame for the condition of this type of child lies primarily with the parents.

Coming to a new land and finding themselves in an environment where they were a small minority, and encountering difficulties that are generally unavoidable in any migration from place to place, some parents deluded themselves into thinking that the only way to avoid these difficulties was to conform as quickly as possible to the surrounding environment by casting off the yoke of Torah and the observance of Mitzvot. Even if they could not easily achieve this for themselves in full measure, they decided that their children should not have to go through that struggle.

They convinced themselves—and also influenced their children—that Yiddishkeit, Torah, and Mitzvot are not "fit" for modern life, especially in a new place. In a true Jewish way of life, they looked for (and eventually "saw") only faults; while in the surrounding environment, they saw only virtues.

Through this approach, the aforementioned parents sought to secure the existence of their children in the new environment. In doing so, they forgot:

That a person cannot exist—as a human being ought to exist—if he gives up his soul-life, his entire spirituality, for the sake of the body and materialism.

They also did not take into account that any mere imitation is false and evokes contempt, even from those whom one wishes to follow and flatter.

And [they forgot] that if the environment and the majority are not established upon righteousness and justice, they will oppress the weaker and the minority anyway.

The same false approach—to solve the plight of a minority in an unfriendly environment through dissolution, which means, in essence, through suicide or at least through self-crippling—was made not only by individuals but, unfortunately, also by specific groups of Jews united by common circumstances. From this grew the various movements that, openly or in disguise, waged war against the "Torah which Moses commanded us," which he received from the One G-d for a people who are "one in the land." These movements, regardless of their internal battles with one another, were all built on the same thought: "Let us be like the nations, like the families of the lands, to serve wood and stone" (Ezekiel 20:32).

The results of this thoroughly false approach were that thousands upon thousands of souls were torn away from their true source of life—from Yiddishkeit and from the Jewish people; they were spiritually murdered. Children grew up, who are now fathers and grandfathers, who are not only not in the category of the Wise, Simple, or the one who doesn't know how to ask—but are not even in the category of the Wicked son.

They have lost themselves, and are being lost, G-d forbid, to the Jewish people and true Yiddishkeit, which are one.

The Exodus from Egypt and the holiday of Passover come and teach us—among many other instructions for daily life—that hope for redemption and freedom does not lie in the attempt to imitate the environment, but exactly the opposite.

The Jews in Egypt were a small minority and lived in the worst conditions. But as our Sages of blessed memory tell us, they separated themselves from the environment and proudly preserved their way of life, traditions, and uniqueness (for the Israelites were distinguished there by their dress, their food, and their language). It was precisely through this that they secured their existence and also attained true redemption, both physically and spiritually.

It is one of the vital tasks of our time to apply the greatest efforts to instill in the younger generation—and even in those who are old in years but young and small in knowledge—the correct appreciation of true Yiddishkeit: Torah-true Yiddishkeit, not a forged or watered-down Yiddishkeit. We must instill the recognition that upon this depends the very existence of a Jew, of every Jew—an existence even in this world, in every place and at every time.

This must continue until they return to the tradition of our fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and with pride establish and preserve the Jewish way of life, living according to the instructions of our Torah, the "Torah of Life."

A Jew must never despair; a Jew must never be given up on. And with the right approach of Ahavat Yisrael, we will also bring the aforementioned type of children into the "Four Sons," and in time, bring them into the category of the "Wise Son."

May the Almighty help that all sons and daughters be gathered together at one table of "this service," to conduct the Passover Seder according to the law, and to carry out "the testimonies, the statutes, and the ordinances which the L-rd our G-d has commanded."

And may the beginning of the "Ingathering of the Exiles"—the gathering of the wandering children at a Torah-Seder—hasten, speedily in our days, the Beginning of the Redemption, and bring the True and Complete Redemption through our righteous Moshiach.

With blessings for a Kosher and Happy Passover.

The Crisis of Meaning: Work, Purpose, and the Modern Soul

The statistics are striking. Over the past 30 years, global suicide rates have risen at an alarming pace. In the United States alone, the rate has increased by 30% since 2000. Most distressing is the trend among teenagers—a demographic that, historically, has been the most optimistic. Between 2007 and 2018, suicide rates among individuals aged 10 to 24 increased by nearly 60%. For girls aged 10 to 14, the rate tripled. Many researchers point to the pervasive influence of social media as a primary driver of this crisis.

Concurrently, mental health challenges have become the defining issue of our era. According to the CDC, nearly one in five adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness. Depression has doubled since 2019, with over 45 million adults grappling with psychological disorders. The American Psychological Association (APA) reports that Gen Z is increasingly hopeless, with over 70% reporting chronic burnout.

These grim realities persist regardless of how comfortable our apartments are, how affordable our clothing is, or how quickly our food is delivered. Money, pleasure, and health are merely the means by which we build a meaningful existence. Yet, in the grip of late-capitalist culture, these means have become ends. Instead of supporting a life of noble purpose, they have become the ultimate purpose. We endlessly optimize our lives—but for what, exactly? In developed countries, we have become the most pampered and comfortable group of "zombies" in history.

To understand the personal weight of this crisis, consider this perspective from Catherine Shannon:

“People are so worn down. There’s a palpable lack of ambition and vitality these days—a stunning lack of life force in the world. People have been drifting for so long they wouldn't recognize meaning if it stood right in front of them. So many things that once gave life real substance are now treated with sarcasm and contempt: college is a waste of money, work is a waste of life, marriage is just a piece of paper, having kids is a nightmare, family is a burden, and earnestly expressing yourself is 'cringe.' If you internalize this perspective, eventually everything becomes a hollow joke.”

Even our time-honored methods for finding meaning feel broken. The rot runs deep, and the sheer scale of systemic decay makes individual effort feel futile. It is no wonder so many succumb to hopelessness.

Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, observed:

“Such widespread phenomena as depression, aggression, and addiction are not understandable unless we recognize the existential vacuum underlying them. Ever more people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for.”

Despite these challenges, we must agree with Frankl: more fundamental than our will to power or pleasure is our will to meaning. It is the primary motivation of human life. To understand why modern life feels so hollow, we must examine two core causes: the nature of modern work and the loss of transcendent purpose.

1. The Nature of Modern Work

The corrosive effects of "wage work" on the human spirit have been documented for generations—from Thoreau and Marx to the cultural critiques of Adorno and David Graeber’s work on "pointless jobs."

No one can build a truly great life without autonomy and leisure, both of which are rare when one’s time is under the control of another. Historically, work looked very different. In the 1700s, approximately 90% of Americans were self-employed, engaged in family trades or agriculture. However physically demanding the labor, it was theirs. It belonged to their identity and their community. Their work carried authorship.

Industrialization shifted this dynamic, replacing autonomous work with wage labor. The problem is not work itself, but work we do not care about—labor performed simply to survive. When we are alienated from our labor, spending our best creative energies on projects that serve someone else’s vision, we experience profound psychological estrangement.

Most people feel their "true selves" exist only outside of work, meaning they are only themselves for a tiny fraction of their lives. This fragmentation erodes the sense of a coherent identity, imposing a kind of "functional dissociation" on the masses. The 2022 TV show Severance captured this nightmare perfectly, depicting a world where employees surgically split their consciousness between their office selves and their personal selves.

The horror of Severance is that it reflects our ordinary reality. We cleave our lives in two, turning our identity into a part-time job. The professional world does not accommodate wholeness. Like a student leaving belongings in a locker, the worker must store away essential aspects of their humanity—curiosity, creativity, and autonomy—before entering the office.

Erich Fromm diagnosed this pathology in The Sane Society:

“Today, we come across a person who acts and feels like an automaton; who never experiences anything which is really his; who experiences himself entirely as the person he thinks he is supposed to be... whose meaningless chatter has replaced communicative speech; whose dulled despair has taken the place of genuine pain.”

Because millions share this "deadness," we call it "normal." If enough people share a disorder, it stops being diagnosed and simply becomes "culture."

This environment has birthed homo economicus. The centrality of money-making has reprogrammed our psyches. We have internalized the belief that we are rational egoists meant to compete rather than collaborate. Effort is no longer seen as having social or moral value; it only has "exchange value." This makes us cold-blooded toward one another. Poverty is viewed as a personal failure rather than a systemic flaw. We are "free to choose," so long as we choose a path that is economically lucrative.

Everything human is subordinated to the bottom line. People destroy themselves physically and spiritually to get ahead financially, staying in this deformed state until the grave. We live in a society where a mother raising virtuous children is considered "economically useless" because she earns no wage, while a banker gambling on asset prices makes millions. Yet, if we remove the parents, civilization collapses; if we remove the speculative gambler, we are often better off.

2. The Loss of Purpose

The second cause of the meaning crisis is the loss of "great ends." A wise life requires that idealism must guide pragmatism. The ideal should be the North Star that sets the direction of your life.

Today, we do the opposite. We sacrifice the ideal for the "real." The motto of the modern adult is "be realistic"—a phrase often used to justify moral laziness or compromise. But the consecrated life—the life devoted to greatness—is just as real as the "realistic" life. We simply forget it exists because we are mimetic creatures; we look around and see a lack of conviction, so we mirror that mediocrity.

The French philosopher Jacques Ellul noticed a widespread sense of impotence. He observed individuals who burn with a desire for justice or progress but have no idea how to act because there are no templates for greatness left to follow.

We must remember: the world is not as it is, it is as you are. As H.G. Wells wrote:

“There is only one sort of man who is absolutely to blame for his own misery, and that is the man who finds life dull and dreary... If the world does not please you, you can change it.”

Psychologist Haim Ginott offered a powerful creed:

“I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element... If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.”

This loss of purpose is institutional. Education, for instance, has devolved into a shallow information-processing center. Neil Postman, in The End of Education, argued that without a great narrative, schools become "houses of detention rather than houses of attention." We obsess over the "engineering" problems—how to teach, what tech to use—but ignore the "metaphysical" problem: What is the point of learning? What kind of person does this produce?

We face the same dilemma with our souls. We optimize our diets, jobs, and routines, but rarely ask what purpose the "optimized self" is supposed to serve. Without a transcendent end—a God to serve, life becomes an endless variety show leading nowhere.

A noble purpose acts as a furnace; it burns off the trivial parts of ourselves and sets fire to our deepest energies. Abraham Maslow warned that we are perfecting our tools while forgetting what they are for. We are racing toward technological change with total blindness to the real human problems involved.

We must recover the ancient truth: Man is a teleological creature—a being whose nature is fulfilled only by moving toward worthy ends. The self is not an empty canvas to be decorated with arbitrary preferences; it is a seed with specific potential, and there is a right way for it to unfold.
