This may well be the intent of the Torah when it says "Vi'ahavta li'rayacha kamocha" love your neighbor as you love yourself. One must first connect very deeply to the I, love it, cherish it and then one can go about loving others.
Many people are disconnected from their true selves making it impossible to love others.
