Every morning we thank Hashem for opening the eyes of the blind "פוקח עורים". The simple meaning is that we are not blind. WHAT A BRACHA!!! Imagine telling a blind person that he could have an painful operation and he will see again - for ten million dollars. He would do ANYTHING to raise the money. OHHHH BOOOOYYYY!!!
We see daily WITHOUT ANY OPERATIONS AND WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY!!!!
THANK YOU HASHEM!!
But the Abudraham doesn't understand the bracha that way. He says that we are thanking Hashem for our intellect:
ואע"פ שאין האדם עור ממש אלא סתום העין נופל בו לשון פקיחה [פ' בראשית ג' ה'] ונפקחו עיניכם, אע"פ שלא היו עורים אלא היו סתומים מן הדעת עכ"ל.
Just as we find the terminology of ונפקחו עיניכם used regarding Adam and Chava means that they now had intellect, so is the meaning of the bracha.
And so writes the Rambam in the Moreh:
והתבונן אמרו עיני שניהם וידעו כי ערומים הם, לא אמר ותפקחנה שניהם ויראו כי אשר ראו קודם הוא אשר ראו אחרי כן ... אבל נתחדש בו ענין שגינה בו מה שלא היה מגנהו קודם. ודע כי זאת המלה פקח לא תפול בשום פנים אלא על ענין גלות ידיעה לא ראות חוש שיתחדש "ויפקח אלקים את עיניה" או "עיני עורים פקוח" כאמרו "עינים להם יראו" וכו' עכ"ל.
Thank you Hashem for my intellect. We are ALL complete Alzheimer patients רח"ל if not for the AMAZING intellect Hashem bestows upon us EVERY SECOND!!! We take it for granted because we are used to it and because everybody else around us has it - like the sun, without which we would all freeze to death. And almost everything else. BUT WE SHOULDN'T!!:-)
