The Gemara [Brachos 5] talks about various categories of יסורין which are under the rubric of יסורין של אהבה. But we are never told what defines יסורין as יסורין של אהבה. If I punch my neighbor in the face, can I tell him that it was an act of love? Can I tell that to the police when arrested for assault and battery?
