Sexual Harassment In The IDF

A wonder that so many religious girls serve in the army and how many parents approve. It reminds me of when I attended "religious" summer camps and wonder how parents could send their innocent children to these places where terrible things go on in the area of Tzniyus and the like. I once tried to explain to parents what goes on in the camp their daughter attended but my words fell on deaf ears. Maybe today things are better that they were 35-40 years ago???

These figures don't include the many many unreported cases and all the cases when there is consensual sexual activity השם ירחם.

והיה מחניך קדוש.

1,542 complaints of sexual harassment in the IDF were lodged in 2020, but only 31 indictments were filed, this according to data presented to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday during a meeting initiated by MKs Emilie Moatti (Labor), Michal Woldiger (Religious Zionism) and Inbar Bezek (Yesh Atid).

Committee Chair MK Ram Ben Barak (Yesh Atid) said, “Recently we have been exposed to a phenomenon of severe cases of sexual harassment in the IDF, and it is our duty to make certain that this severe and dangerous phenomenon is eradicated." He called to educate newly enlisted soldiers about the phenomenon, and stressed that the IDF “must show zero tolerance for these phenomena and make sure female soldiers have a safe work environment."

MK Moatti discussed the IDF's continued failure to curb the sexual harassment phenomenon, noting that some offenders return to their positions even before legal proceedings against them have been completed. “More than 1,500 complaints about sexual harassment are filed each year, and those are only from the few and the brave who dare to complain," she said.

MK Merav Ben Ari (Yesh Atid) discussed the sexual harassment she experienced during her army service, while MK Shlomo Karhi (Likud) said returning a sex offender to his or her environment is akin to returning someone who attempted to murder to the scene of the crime and to the victims' environment. MK Ofir Katz (Likud) stressed the need to narrow the gap between the number of complaints and the low number of indictments.
