Elokei Avrohom, Elokei Yitzchok, V’Elokei Yaakov: The Three Midos Through Which HaKadosh Baruch Hu is Revealed in Creation (Part II)
In the previous gilyon, we began examining the midos of HaKadosh Baruch Hu—HaGadol, HaGibbor, and HaNorah. There is an aspect of the essential midos at their celestial root, and there is their manifestation (hisgalus) within briah through the Avos HaKedoshim, who personify the ultimate tzuras ha’adam in actualization: the Chessed of Avrohom, the Din of Yitzchok, and the synthesis of both—the middah of Yaakov.
Let us elucidate further. As noted, the outward expansion (hispashtus) of Chessed and the inward contraction (hiskansus) of Din are fundamentally contradictory. Yet, there exists a reality synthesizing both Chessed and Din wherein they subsist in tandem; indeed, such is the blueprint of all existence. It is a distinct middah of HaKadosh Baruch Hu to reconcile two opposing poles and fuse them into a single entity. In truth, this phenomenon is an absolute marvel (peleh)—a reality transcending human comprehension.
Let us reflect upon our own human midos—our patterns of conduct, relational dynamics, and internal orientations—to locate where these faculties operate. We readily comprehend the nature of ahavah (love); it is hispashtus, an active outward drawing near: "I am drawn after You like water." Conversely, we intimately recognize sin’ah (repulsion/estrangement); it is histalkus (withdrawal)—recoil, shrinking into oneself, withholding any outward reach toward the other. These reflect elemental human relationships. Where, then, do we find an orientation that synthesizes both polarities—hispashtus and histalkus simultaneously? It is the middah termed Kavod (honor/reverence).
Let us analyze the essence of Kavod. The Baraisa in Kiddushin (31b) formulates regarding honoring parents:
"Our Rabbis taught: What constitutes Mora (awe/fear), and what constitutes Kibud (honor)? Mora: One may neither stand in his parent’s place, nor sit in his seat, nor contradict his words, nor tell him he is right. Kibud: One feeds him, provides him drink, garbs him, covers him, and leads him in and out."
Here, both modalities converge: Kavod and Mora united in one concrete reality.
Regarding parents, Kavod and Mora are articulated in separate verses ("Kabeid es avicha" and "Ish imo v’aviv tira’u"). However, regarding Talmidei Chachomim and a king, they are not split into distinct verses; they constitute a single, indivisible mode of comportment. A comportment forged and unified in this manner is the essence of Kavod and Mora. They are two faces of the identical reality, expressed whenever one experiences authentic Kavod toward another. This dynamic generates the Rambam’s classical question: "And what is the pathway to His love and His fear?" These two postures appear intrinsically contradictory, yet must abide under a single roof. As the Mishnah in Pirkei Avos (2:10) states: "Warm yourself by the light of the Sages, but be wary of their glowing coals lest you be burned." This perfectly encapsulates both vectors.
This middah is Kavod, whose designation in Torah terminology is HaNorah. As we observe, HaNorah corresponds directly to the halachos of Kavod. HaNorah implies a dimension of being held in dread—restraint, histalkus, withdrawal. Yet nested within this very middah is its inverse, for Chazal teach that the etymology of yirah (awe) shares the letters of re’iyah (vision). Thus, it does not denote absolute abandonment. It is not a norah of total flight; rather, it invites approach. This is Kavod; this is HaNorah.
Thus, HaGadol denotes continuous growth and boundless expansion—the celestial influx of Chessed. Absent Chessed, nothing can flourish; all growth stems from the hispashtus of Chessed. Gibbor signifies the containment of phenomena: "Who is strong? He who subdues his inclination." It restricts, binds, and exercises histalkus—operating inward toward containment rather than outward toward disclosure. HaNorah, as established, is appended to synthesize them. As the verse declares: "HaKeil HaGadol, HaGibbor, v'HaNorah, who shows no favor and takes no bribe." The conjunctive vav in v'HaNorah signals an addition to the preceding terms—v'HaNorah bridges and unites HaGadol and HaGibbor.
This is the middah of Yaakov Avinu, corresponding to yiras haromemus (sublime awe of Divine transcendence). It is distinct from the yirah of Yitzchok termed Pachad, articulated by Yeshayahu (2:19): "And they shall enter into the caverns of the rocks... from before the terror of Hashem and the splendor of His majesty." In the ultimate future, when HaKadosh Baruch Hu reveals Himself, they will cower in crevasses. But the posture of Kavod is precisely the reverse: it is a mitzvah to gaze upon and behold His glory.
The middah of Kavod is known as Tiferes, the hallmark of Yaakov Avinu: "Yisroel, in whom I am glorified (espa'er)." Tiferes signifies that which is glorious must be beheld; the glory consists in the beholding itself. This reality was manifested through Avrohom, Yitzchok, and Yaakov, who assumed His Malchus through these midos in consummate perfection.
HaNorah is the sublime integration of Chessed and Din within His majesty and splendor (tiferes). It encapsulates the cognition of His transcendence, which does not induce panic, but draws one near. True, Tiferes brings a dimension of self-nullification (bittul), yet alongside that bittul surges an intense longing to cleave unto Him. Such is Tiferes.
"What is the Pathway to His Love and His Awe?" — Synthesizing Ahavah and Yirah
The Rambam writes (Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah 2:1):
"This venerable and awesome God—it is a mitzvah to love Him and to fear Him, as it is stated: 'And you shall love Hashem your God,' and it is stated: 'Hashem your God you shall fear.'"
In Halacha 2, the Rambam continues:
"And what is the pathway to His love and His fear? When a person contemplates His wondrous, immense deeds and creations, perceiving through them His infinite, peerless wisdom, he immediately loves, praises, glorifies, and yearns with intense desire to know the Great Name, as Dovid stated: 'My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.' Yet, as he meditates upon these very same matters, he instantly recoils backward in dread, recognizing that he is but a minuscule, lowly, obscure creature standing with frail intellect before the Master of Perfect Knowledge, as Dovid stated: 'When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers... what is man that You should remember him?'"
Why did the Rambam formulate it thus? In most mitzvos, the Torah does not instruct us through such psychological frameworks. In Hilchos Tzitzis, the Rambam does not detail the experiential method to effectuate the garment. In Hilchos De’os, regarding cleaving to His ways, he does not prefix it with "what is the pathway," though volumes of mussar could be dedicated to it. Every person understands the fundamental definitions of love and awe; once the objective is commanded, one must fulfill it. What novel insight does the Rambam impart with "what is the pathway to His love and His fear?"
It is a misreading of the peshat to assume the Rambam is merely defining love and fear in isolation. The Rambam is revealing how these two contradictory imperatives can be actualized simultaneously. This is the profound secret of the phrase: "When he meditates upon these very same matters." Both states of being emerge from the identical contemplation: the surge to draw close along with the overwhelming realization of His infinitude that demands backward recoil.
The creation itself harbors both polarities: in the very rush where one yearns to know the Great Name, contemplating that selfsame reality causes one to immediately recoil. That recoil is the realization of Yirah. Both abide synchronously in the heart of one who loves and fears. This is why the Rambam joins them into a single halacha rather than dividing them.
Norah represents the synthesis between the terrifying transcendence of HaKadosh Baruch Hu and the fact that He reveals Himself unto us. HaKadosh Baruch Hu is glorified through this; this is how His Kavod and Tiferes are perceived in the cosmos. He manifests through His Kavod, and in that revelation, what is perceived is His norah’os (awesomeness). We, the yere’im (reverent), are the ones according Him Kavod, perceiving His absolute sublimity.
The Middah of Norah Revealed in the Beis HaMikdash
This illuminates the sugya in Yoma (69b):
"Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: Why were they called the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah? Because they restored the crown to its pristine glory. Moshe arrived and proclaimed: 'HaKeil HaGadol, HaGibbor, v'HaNorah.' Yirmiyahu arose and said: 'Gentiles are trampling within His Sanctuary; where is His awesomeness (norah’osav)?' Thus, he omitted Norah. Daniel arose and said: 'Gentiles are subjugating His children; where is His might (gevurosav)?' Thus, he omitted Gibbor. The Men of the Great Assembly arose and proclaimed: 'On the contrary! This constitutes the very zenith of His might—that He subdues His wrath and extends forbearance to the wicked. And these are His awesome deeds—for were it not for the awe of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, how could a lone sheep survive among seventy wolves?' And how could the Rabbis bypass the ordinance established by Moshe? Rabbi Elazar replied: Because they knew HaKadosh Baruch Hu values truth, they would not speak falsehood before Him."
The Gemara underscores that our very survival is sustained solely by the awe (mora) of HaKadosh Baruch Hu hovering over the nations. There is a cosmic restraint. That restraint does not prevent them from persecuting us, but it checks them at a distinct boundary; it grants them license, yet imposes an immutable limit. This is the manifestation of His norah’os.
Why did Yirmiyahu omit Norah and Daniel omit Gibbor? If gentiles subjugate His children, where is His revealed gevurah? Can plunder be seized from a mighty warrior? When His glory is obscured, that middah ceases to be manifest. Heaven forbid they doubted the Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu; they possessed absolute emunah in His attributes. However, there is a principle that one cannot praise HaKadosh Baruch Hu with a middah not currently manifest in terrestrial Providence (hanhagah b'fo'al)—just as we do not recite HaMelech HaKadosh or HaMelech HaMishpat throughout the year, nor Mashiv HaRuach in summer.
The Tosafos Yeshanim in Yoma cite the Yerushalmi in Ta’anis: "Yirmiyahu said: 'Norah' applies exclusively to the Beis HaMikdash, as it is stated: 'Awesome (Norah) is God from Your Sanctuaries'—hence, he omitted Norah." When gentiles rampage through His Sanctuary, the middah of Norah is concealed. Throughout Tanach, the Beis HaMikdash is termed "v’nikdash bichvodi"—the resting place of His Kavod. Norah manifests precisely where Kavod reigns. When heathen nations defile the Sanctuary, that Kavod appears eclipsed; hence, Yirmiyahu omitted Norah.
Revelation Upon the "Tzuras Ha’Adam" Completed by the Avos
These three midos—HaGadol, HaGibbor, and HaNorah—correspond directly to Elokei Avrohom, Elokei Yitzchok, and Elokei Yaakov. Elokei Avrohom is HaKeil HaGadol; Elokei Yitzchok is HaGibbor; v'HaNorah is Elokei Yaakov.
These are modalities of active Providence (hanhagah b’fo’al). At the celestial root, Chessed is unalloyed benevolence. Yet there is the historical governance wherein HaKadosh Baruch Hu performs Chessed in the revealed realm, as Eliezer declared: "By it I shall know that You have performed chessed with my master."
Every Divine revelation is directed toward the archetype of man (tzuras ha’adam). The completion of revelation requires a recipient capable of integrating it. Absent a recipient, it cannot be deemed a revelation. Just as a name uncalled by any being is stripped of its reality, so too, the revelation of Chessed (HaKeil HaGadol) necessitated an individual within whom it rested in perfection: Avrohom Avinu.
The Avos HaKedoshim established the definitive tzuras ha’adam in creation. Since the primordial sin of Adam HaRishon, Chazal state: "You are designated adam, while the nations are not designated adam." The archetype of Adam to whom the Divine address is directed belongs solely to the descendants of Avrohom, Yitzchok, and Yaakov. Thus, the invocation of Elokei Avrohom, Elokei Yitzchok, v'Elokei Yaakov is the very nexus of Divine revelation.
The Avos Are the Merkavah — The Manifestation of His Malchus
This is the mystical reality of Ha’Avos hein hein haMerkavah (the Patriarchs themselves constitute the Divine Chariot). A merkavah represents the vehicle through which a sovereign departs his inner palace to govern his realm. Within the inner chamber, His attributes remain transcendent; yet to reign over creation, they require a merkavah—human vessels through whom His governance is actualized. The midos of cosmic governance are HaGadol, HaGibbor, and HaNorah, and the Avos serve as the Chariot for their terrestrial transmission.
This same paradigm extends to Klal Yisroel: through us, His Elokus is revealed to the cosmos. Yisroel is termed an ama peziza who placed their mouths before their ears, championing Na’aseh V’Nishma. Action precedes intellectual assimilation; that is our cognitive vessel. We do not operate where theoretical wisdom eclipses deed.
Adam HaRishon prior to the sin bore the pristine title of Adam; post-transgression, he retained but a fraction of that stature. Only after profound teshuvah and the birth of Shes did the root of tzuras ha’adam begin to re-emerge. For twenty generations—from Adam to Noach, and Noach to Avrohom—that archetype lay dormant, re-emerging only through the Avos, rooted in the 130 years of Adam’s penance and mortification (Eruvin 18b; Pirkei D'Rabbi Eliezer 20; Zohar).
Consequently, Yaakov Avinu, the choice of the Patriarchs (b’chir she’ba’avos), perfected the tzuras ha’adam. Of him Chazal state: "The beauty of Yaakov Avinu was evocative of the primordial beauty of Adam HaRishon" (Bava Metzia 84a). He restored the archetype of "Yisroel, in whom I take glory." We are summoned to labor with every ounce of our spiritual faculties to authentically conduct ourselves as the children of Avrohom, Yitzchok, and Yaakov.
The Consummation of Avrohom’s Chessed Through the Disclosure of Yirah
The gevurah of Yitzchok consisted of subduing the yetzer. In contrast, Avrohom Avinu fulfilled "You shall love Hashem your God with all your heart"—with both inclinations (b'shnei yitzrecha)—by enlisting the natural faculties in Divine service. When Avrohom ran toward the herd on the third day of his circumcision, his physical vitality served his archetype: to herald the Name of Heaven.
Yet at the Akeidah, Avrohom was commanded to act diametrically against his nature. There, the verse proclaims: "Now I know that you are a God-fearing man (yerei Elokim), for you have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me." In its inner depth, this was not an act of Chessed, but the tenth and supreme trial—for authentic Chessed is authenticated solely when it recognizes its Divine limits, submitting to the awe of Heaven.
Generic chessed is merely a natural temperament; but Chessed l'Avrohom is a refined faculty capable of self-abnegation whenever the Divine will dictates the reverse. Avrohom bypassed his innate inclinations entirely. As the Midrash details, the Sitra Achara hurled torrential obstacles in his path—rivers, mountains, pitfalls, and insidious philosophical rationalizations—rendering the test of the Akeidah extraordinarily daunting.
Sarah Imeinu’s Dread: The Possibility of a Erroneous Prophecy
One of the early masters (kadmonim) noted that the soul of Sarah Imeinu did not depart merely out of horror that her son was nearly slaughtered—for Avrohom was subordinate to Sarah in prophetic stature. Rather, she was paralyzed with dread at the contemplation: How could Avrohom have entertained a premise that was ostensibly absolute absurdity? Regarding child sacrifice, the verse in Yirmiyahu (19:5) explicitly states: "Which I did not command, nor did I speak, nor did it enter My heart." The Gemara in Ta’anis (4a) expounds:
"'Which I did not command'—this refers to the son of Meisha, King of Moav; 'nor did I speak'—this refers to the daughter of Yiftach; 'nor did it enter My heart'—this refers to Yitzchok, son of Avrohom."
For Avrohom, it was an explicit Divine nisayon. But for Sarah, who stood outside the direct transmission of this trial, the command was incomprehensible: How could a prophet of Avrohom's stature entertain such a premise? She seized upon the profound impossibility of "nor did it enter My heart." According to the fundamental principles of prophecy, human sacrifice is an impossible postulate. It was purely an anomaly of "God tested Avrohom."
Avrohom was mandated to submit to the test. But Sarah, standing outside its direct orbit, could not fathom how such an action could be considered. Upon hearing that they had departed on such an enterprise, her soul departed from absolute shock. Her terror was not merely for the physical safety of Yitzchok; her anguish was for Avrohom and Yitzchok together—the foundational pillars of His Kavod in the world—reeling at the incomprehensible specter that they could have embarked upon an act so contrary to the Divine essence.
