The pasuk says [Shmos 21-15] that if one strikes his parents, he receives the death penalty.
"מכה אביו ואמו מות יומת".
Says the Ralbag:
והנה התועלת בזאת המצוה מבואר; וזה, שאם יקל האדם בהוריו - יסור ממנו מוּסרם אשר הוא מיישיר ללקיחת המוּסר בתורה; עם שזה יורה על תכונה רעה מאד, לגמול רע למי שגמלהו טוב והביאהו לחיי העולם הזה.
If one is not respectful of his parents then he will not accept their rebuke and admonishment to keep the Torah [and will act like a wild animal]. It is also a terrible display of being an ingrate. After all the parents have done for him [like granting him life!] - he hits them!!!
