The Rambam says:
However, under no circumstance should a
person who lacks the fear of God be appointed to any position in
Israel, even though he possesses much knowledge. [Melachim 1--7]
That renders null and void most of the Knesset members now and from the inception of the State.
I find it odd that there is and has been almost no Gadol Amiti Bi-Yisrael who has been a flag-waving-Hallel-saying-religious-Zionist. Yet, people who are far less pious when it comes to the entire Torah claim that these Rabbonim and Tzadikim are inferior Jews b/c they don't celebrate the birth of the State. Like, the Chazon Ish, Brisker Rov, Klausenberger Rebbe, Lubavitcher Rebbe, Steipler Gaon, etc. etc. etc. all were not aligned with the correct Torah approach while people who are not even in their spiritual universe are [I would give examples but people are sensitive and I don't want to offend....]???
Some people answer - but there were Gedolei Torah who felt positively towards the Medinah such as Rav Herzog, Rav Zevin and Rav Meshulam Roth [who is not so well known but was a Gaon Olam. Those who can learn a little and see his sefarim can see that]!!!??
True. Maybe they were right. Only Hashem knows for sure. But isn't the opposition of so many great people and Tzadikim at least a question? Shouldn't it create a little bit of a safek? Shouldn't it temper one's unbridled enthusiasm?? Shouldn't the tremendous Chilulei Hashem that have been created by the government the last 74 years cause one to feel at least some Tza'ar???
It goes w/o saying that just about nobody would prefer living under an oppressive Gentile government. So it is better now in many ways than it was. But the present situation is also cause for much consternation.
So tonight at Maariv I refrained from saying Tachanun b/c of the happy day. Tomorrow [Thursday] my minyan will read the Torah [Emor which is Parshas Hamoadim!!!]. But there is a limit.
