Rav Elyashiv ztz"l was asked by Rav Shteinman Shlita what a couple who is in the teshuva process should be told to keep first - Shabbos or Taharas Hamishpacha.
I would answer - Shabbos!
- Firstly, a practical reason: Once they taste Shabbos they will want to remain religious. I think that Shabbos is much more of a "draw" than Taharas Hamishpacha.
Two purely halachic reasons:
- If they don't keep Shabbos they can do hundreds of issurim every Shabbos, many more than they would do if they don't keep Taharas Hamishpacha.
- Shabbos is a חיוב סקילה while Niddah is not as stringent - "only" a kares but no מיתת בית דין.
Also, look at how many times Shabbos is mentioned in the Torah - many more times than איסור נדה. And one who is מחלל שבת has a דין גוי unlike a בועל נדה.
